The 2017-2018 academic year was late 2010s for sure but looking back I think the 2018-2019 year was the peak of late 2010s culture. When I hear songs like Sicko Mode, Thank U Next, 7 Rings, Happier, Sunflower, and Old Town Road, they really encapsulate the culture and style of the late 2010s. Airpods were worn by many people at my college. The bezel-less phones became a standard in the smartphone industry. The Gen Z-dominated TikTok was a successor to the Millennial-dominated Vine of the mid 2010s. Fortnite was the biggest game. The release of the Avengers: Endgame. When people will look back on the late 2010s, they will look back on the late 2018/early 2019 period.

I say both years were. Everything you mentioned began in the 2017-18 year. First, Tiktok started as Musical.ly and then rose to fame, and Fortnite became popular during that same year. Plus, songs such as Rockstar, Mi Gente, Unforgettable, God's Plan, Sad, Issues, etc., capture that period as well.

Late 2010’s only comprises of three years so I don’t see why people wouldn’t just remember the center, 2018.
