I just have that feeling its going to be very split atmosphere wise, we have yet to see, but so far the first part of this year feels kind of distant to August in a way. I don't know if it's the impending recession talk that is taking up the airwaves or Katy Perry's career tanking even worse then before but I just have this feeling 2019 will be split.

I don’t really agree. If anything, I’d actually say 2018 was a split year. The tide pod stuff that happened earlier in that year already seemed long ago by like August 2018.

Maybe I’m not as in tune with mainstream pop culture this year as I have been in the past, but no, I don’t notice a difference.

Well my canned answer as always is that we won’t be able to tell until we see what changes. Tbf, isn’t the last year of a decade always kinda split? I’m like 80% confident I can see bits of what the early 20’s aesthetic will be. Obviously I can’t confirm that yet, but if I’m right, then these things are already going on, and will thus retrospectively give this year these “20’s influences”. Right now I don’t feel any strong changes like I was in 09 though.

I don’t know what makes 2019 split but I hope that the changes will be more clear in the Fall of 2019.

I lost interest in pop culture years ago ergo all of this goes over my head!

I disagree. Everyone is waiting for some kind of big cultural shift but I just don't see it right now. I think this decade transition will look a lot more like the 80s-90s than the past couple of decade changeovers. 2020 will likely be very much like 2017-2019. By 2022 things will be noticeably different and by 2025 we will be in another world.

I'd like to think 2020 as similar to the late-10s only for us to look back at it in 2029 and being weirded out. Makes a decade interesting.

There's a strong chance that could significantly change things.

2018 did feel split just with the Fortnite popularity. In the beginning of the year Fortnite was starting to gain momentum, by 2nd quarter of the year the game really became a cultural phenomenon, the summer was when the game was starting to dip a bit, and by the end of the year people started to lose interest of Fortnite.

SharksFan99 says he wants to enforce against decadeology more firmly again, so I'm locking this thread to discourage these types of discussions. Every year is "split" to a certain degree.
