The religious right are playing a big part as well, being anti-mask and wanting to just pretend the virus doesn't exist. They think if they can create the illusion of normalcy, people will feel great about Donald Trump and re-elect him.
But yeah I don't think the economy comes back until the 2030s and we'll be more or less on lockdown until 2022. It sucks because the people not taking this seriously are ruining everyone else's lives. It's not just about not getting grandma sick (though that should be reason enough as it is). It's about getting through this as a society so we can get back to real normal.
Covid and it's aftermath will likely define the era between now and 2040. The world is headed for a great reset and the economic crash we are currently experiencing, I believe, will set it off. By this, I don't mean we will still be dealing with the pandemic in 2040, but that the pandemic has set things in motion that will completely change the geopolitical balance on this planet. I believe in the 2020s, the European Union will outshine the US, which will remain mired in depression and double-digit unemployment all decade long.
All of this is the fault of one man, Donald Trump. He will be one of the 21st century's great villains and will likely be considered the beginning of the decline if not the end of the United States. I think more people need to start making the Hitler comparison. Yes, it's overdone, but that's legitimately what we have here.
