What is your opinion on this? Many people pinpoint Lorde's "Royals" as being the song that shifted the pendulum away from the Millennials, but I've personally never agreed with it. I tend to think people overstate the influence that it had on Top-40 music at the time. For starters, electropop had already been declining in chart presence by the time "Royals" first debuted on the charts back in April 2013. Music in general was much more minimalist and acoustic-driven than it had been just a couple of years prior. Case in point, Passenger's "Let Her Go" was a chart-topping global hit at that time, while indie and EDM songs such as "Ho Hey", "I Could Be The One" and "Can't Hold Us" were occupying the Top-20 as well.
I'm personally of the belief that "Black Beatles" was the song that truly kickstarted Gen Z's reign in music. Not only was this song a mega-hit in it's own right, but it also spawned the Mannequin Challenge fad and solidified Trap's presence in the Top-40 mainstream. I know personally this was the first song which made me feel as though I wasn't in the core target-audience for the music. "Black Beatles" was particularly popular with the kids in the younger years (Classes 2020-2021), but besides participating in the Mannequin Challenge (which is something people of all ages did), people in my year group never really got into the music itself.

Was Lorde really not a Millennial? *looks up birth date* Huh, fancy that. Well, the entire concept of generations is subjective to begin with and people have conflicting opinions over where the boundaries start/finish, so it can't be said for certain either way. From a 2019 context, I feel as though someone like Billie Eilish is more representative of Generation Z as an overall demographic and she is five years younger than Lorde.

Royals is an anti-materialistic song and most of Gen Z loves Trap Rap, glorifies materialism.

Yeah and then we graduated from high school or college right in the middle of the Great Recession, permanently handicapping our lifetime earnings.

True, millennials grew up in the crunk era of rap (early-mid 2000s) which was all about money, cars and degrading women. Even the early 2010s you had a lot of those songs being played on the radio so millennials aren't exempt from it either.
