This is like, the very earliest possible stuff I can remember. Makes me think of "All That". Baggy t-shirts were really in, huh? That black Adidas stripe shirt is totally in right now. There's a sporty vibe here that I do distinctly remember from 98.
Stuff for little kids still had that bright 90's thing going on interestingly. My clothes didn't look anything like this.

When 4th grade school year kicked off it felt like another world from the year previous.

It really was, September 97 felt like a breath of fresh air (as I have stated in the past) it felt 100% without a doubt we were in a new era

I think I have a VHS of me laying in a crib from this particular month.

It's strange to think that this was just 18 months before I was born. The fact that I was even born in the same era as these photos is almost a bit of a novelty in a way, especially seeing as though I have no recollections of when these aesthetics and trends were in fashion.

I recall late August of 1997, close enough. I mean, I may still not be able to remember the mid '90s, but having extraordinary good memory for things that happened to me below the age of 3, at least that means I remember when things weren't a spitting image of what they were in 2000.

The 90s are from the 20th century but it feels more like the 21st century.

at this point I threw my SNES in the bushes and traded up for a PS1 and N64. Blockbuster at the time was having a HUGE sale in September trying to get rid of 16 bit games.

My only memory from August 1997 was from exactly 22 years ago today. It was of a birthday party where there was karaoke and the song was Mama by the Spice Girls. The fact that Princess Diana's death was announced in the car on the way to the birthday party dates it to exactly 22 years ago today. (Of course I don't remember that part. )

Yeah, September 1997 was an awesome month. I had just started 5th grade, and was basically at peak childhood.
The premiere of OSM was huge that month. The N64 and PlayStation were clearly overtaking the 16-bit consoles as the most popular. Hanson was very popular with girls. Power Rangers was not as popular as they had been the previous school year, but Pokemon hadn't emerged yet. Rugrats had come back on Nick, and that along with Hey Arnold were the two most popular shows. Full House was very popular for kids to watch on syndication.

I'm 7 years old by this point. Yes, as above, this is the first time period that I remember with clarity. Certainly I have memories from other, earlier periods, but this is my first memory of pop culture around me. This is the year the '90s really became "the Nineties" as understood by Millennials, with the aesthetic expressed in shows like Kenan & Kel and Space Jam (even though, yes, these are both technically from 1996).
In terms of my consumption of hauntological works like vaporwave, this is "home base" for where that hauntology is sourced.

Just looking through these pictures again, i'm a bit surprised by the complete absence of flannelette shirts in these photos. I understand that they had generally declined in popularity around that time, however I have photos of me as a toddler from 2000 and 2001 wearing flannel shirts, so I would have expected them to still at least be somewhat in vogue in September 1997. There would be subtle differences in the longevity of fashion trends between the US and Australia though.

Australia is usually a little behind when it comes to fashion, so like if a place like the mid west takes while you can imagine how long an entire country takes back in the 90s without the internet.
