I understand that both Michael Jackson and Prince had successful careers which spanned multiple decades, however they were arguably at the peak of their powers during the 1980s and that is why I've decided to create this topic in the '80s sub-forum.
I have a lot of respect for Michael Jackson as an artist and how influential he was to the music industry, but I've never been much of a fan of his music. "Thriller" is incredibly overrated and his '70s output with The Jackson Five doesn't take my interest either. His career also took a massive nosedive after the release of "Black or White" in 1991, IMO.
Personally, I believe Prince was the better artist out of the two. Not only was he an excellent guitarist, but he also pushed the envelope more in terms of where he wanted to take his music. My favourite songs of his are "When Doves Cry", "Kiss" and "Raspberry Beret".
Which artist do you prefer out of the two? Michael Jackson or Prince?

I admit that I haven't gone through MJ's albums very thoroughly, but Michael stands out to me more as a singles-based artist while Prince on the hand made absolutely wonderful and thoroughly great albums like "Controversy", "1999", "Sign ☮️ The Times" and the "Purple Rain" soundtrack. Otherwise they aren't that many similarities between the two artists. Prince's raunchy funk music is just more interesting to me than MJ's safer and image-based pop music (although I still respect and admire the output of the latter artist). Plus purple is best color.

Michael. I couldn't stand Prince, although I respect the fact he was a multi instrumentalist and wrote his own songs.

Of course both musicians are icons. However when it comes to other musician influences, MJ would probably have a higher percentage than Prince mainly because he was mostly listened to when they were growing up rather than Prince or it can be switched depending on whom you ask. If you ask me, I listened to more MJ than I did with Prince.

Michael had a bigger impact on the music industry as a whole, and he's a lot more known worldwide. Half of his discography is pop classics. However, if we're talking about musicianship and artistry, Prince has MJ beat by a long shot. On top of writing all of his music, he also produced, engineered, and played all of the interments for most of his work. Plus, Prince doesn't need a Quincy Jones to reach pop perfection. And his best album is still Sign 'O' The Times. I think Prince should be compared with someone like Stevie Wonder instead of MJ.

I agree with those comparisons. They may have been two of the biggest male pop-stars of the '80s, but otherwise, drawing similarities between their works is like comparing apples and oranges. Michael Jackson would never release a psychedelic-infused, funk song like "Raspberry Beret", much like how Prince wouldn't come up with something as commercially palatable as "Bad". Yep. Michael Jackson was always the more "accessible" to the mainstream masses out of the two, so I do tend to agree that his work most likely influenced a greater share of musicians. That's not to discredit Prince and the success he experienced though. At his peak, he was the only male pop-star to have challenged Michael Jackson in terms of popularity and relevancy. Michael had a bigger impact on the music industry as a whole, and he's a lot more known worldwide. Half of his discography is pop classics. However, if we're talking about musicianship and artistry, Prince has MJ beat by a long shot. Speaking of Michael Jackson and his global recognition, one thing which worked both in his favour and against him was the fact that he was involved in a fair share of controversies throughout his career. Incidents such as his change in appearance, the child sex abuse allegations and the baby dangling fiasco, helped keep him in the public spotlight. Had those incidents not occurred, would he be as universally recognised as he is today? It's debatable, but it can't be denied that the string of incidents did influence the public's recognition of him.
