I was going to post this in the sports sub-forum, however I decided to post it here as it does relate to the media. Who are your favourite and least favourite sports personalities (commentators, panelists etc.) and why?
Here are mine:
Best:
* Peter Sterling - A true professional in every regard and arguably the best sports analyst at Nine. Not only is he intelligent, but he has such a great insight into the game and he speaks really articulately.
* Simon Hill - Very passionate and insightful about football (soccer). He is the best football commentator here in Australia.
* Ray Warren - Age has gotten to him in recent years, but he still remains the "voice of rugby league".
* Andrew Voss - Brings a lot of excitement/energy to his commentating and is very passionate about rugby league.
Phil Gould makes a lot of interesting points and has an excellent knowledge of rugby league, however he has a few irritating habits (e.g such as his idea that the Shark's home stadium is comparable to the Bermuda Triangle). Brad Fitler and Andrew Johns are okay.
Worst:
* Johnathon Thurston - He was one of the greatest halfbacks to ever play professional rugby league, but he is an awful sideline analyzer. He often stumbles on his words and has a hard time putting sentences together. I feel as though Nine only employed him to the role due to his infamous laugh.
* Archie Thompson - Jokes around to compensate for his lack of skills as a professional football analyst.
* Ray Hadley - Is a bit of a scumbag as a person, but I've never been a fan of his commentating anyway.

Don't really pay too much attention to sports coverage, but am familiar enough with the rugby league commentators to agree with SharksFan's analysis of them. Most of the reports I've heard about Ray Hadley would suggest that along with being a terrible broadcaster, he's far from the nicest person away from the microphone. Brad Fitler and Andrew Johns are okay. Freddy & Joey are probably relatively high profile personalities on Nine's NRL coverage because they were considered to be two of Australia's best rugby league players (perhaps even THE two best of their era) during the 1990s and 2000s? I could imagine both receiving a considerable profile lift after Peter Sterling and Ray Warren retire from broadcasting.

Don't know if many of you guys would know all these personalities/commentators, but here it goes...
Best: * Anthony Hudson - commentated many grand finals with famous lines in those games, still enjoy his commentary on radio and Fox Footy * Stephen Quartermain - great commentator when he was on TV, still good to listen to on radio commentary and ten news these days * Tony Jones - made fun of a lot but can blame him (if you know what I'm talking about), but very hard working * Dennis Cometti - great voice, nothing else to say
Worst: * Brian Taylor - very annoying AFL commentator that looks like Dipper (guy with moustache), but funny segment he has at the end of the footy and goes around the rooms * Shane Crawford/Brendan Fevola - especially when they were on the footy show last year, they try to be funny but I am sick of them * Eddie McGuire - nice guy, but a terrible and biased commentator
Unsure: * Bruce Mcavaney - he used to be good but kind of annoying these days so not sure where to put him...

I was personally too young to remember the peak of their careers during the Late '90s/Early 2000s, but they were definitely some of the biggest stars of their era. If i'm not mistaken, there have even been calls in the past for Andrew Johns to one day become a rugby league immortal. Don't know the people you have there but is that the guy thats on all those NRL ads with the annoying voice? Lol I'm not too sure who you are referring to without hearing the ads, tbh. You might be thinking of Phil Gould.

* Eddie McGuire - nice guy, but a terrible and biased commentator Says the Collingwood supporter. In all seriousness though, I have watched bits of the AFL Footy Show (while Eddie McGuire was hosting the program) in the past and he seemed okay from the little I saw. I've never listened to him commentate though. I'm not too familiar with Brendan Fevola (I have seen him on the AFL Footy Show before, but not often enough to make a judgement), but I have seen Shane Crawford appear on various programs in the past. I'm not much of a fan of him either. I thought he was good on "I'm a Celebrity" however.

Definitely BT. Most of the Channel 7 commentary team are god-awful. Another reason I hope they lose the rights next broadcast rights. I didn’t mind Bruce a few years ago but he is so annoyingly OTT in his commentating these days. DELICIOUS!

In his prime, he was easily one of the best commentators on Australian television, however he is now well into his late '70s and his skills have deteriorated quite noticeably as a result.

However, I would add Dwayne Russell, Basil Zempilas and Luke Darcy under “worst” also. Those three are really bad and shouldn’t be commenting. Huddo is easily the best has been for quite a long stretch now. It’s shame he’s locked away on Fox.

Some more observations:
Rugby League
* Paul "Fatty" Vautin - He cops quite a lot of flack from people, but I personally think he is okay. I've never had an issue with his contributions to The Footy Show and Nine's NRL coverage in general.
* Darren Lockyer - It's through no fault of his own, but his gravelly voice just isn't suited to presenting.
* James Bracey - A decent host and I think he adds a lot to Nine's coverage, however he is too upbeat and cheery for my liking. Always has a smile on his face.
* Wally Lewis - Wally isn't a panelist; he is an observer. Whenever he is featured on Nine's rugby league coverage, he only ever speaks about general observations from the game and never goes into any great depth about topics of discussion. For a supposed "king", he adds nothing.
* Erin Molan - I'm sure she is a nice person, however I have never really been able to take to her. Her appointment to the co-hosting role on The Footy Show was something I always found questionable. With no disrespect to Erin, I feel as though she only got the role simply to be a point of difference from the male-dominated presenting line-up and to use her good looks to attract more male viewers back to the show. I also don't like her role on "20-to-1" either.
* Ruan Sims - Just don't like her.
* Neil Breen - He raises a few interesting points when he appears on "100% Footy", however I've never been much of a fan of his presenting for Nine News.
* Danny Weidler - I've always got the impression that off-camera, he just isn't a nice person in general. He is widely loathed in the rugby-league community. Also, he never really adds much when he occasionally appears on "100% Footy".
* Yvonne Sampson - She does a great job at presenting Fox League's rugby league coverage and I always liked her contributions on Nine as well.
* Michael Ennis - Obviously i'm bias (he was apart of the Shark's 2016 GF squad), but he has a great knowledge of the game and I enjoy hearing his contributions.
I forgot to mention this in my earlier post, but another one of my least favourite sports personalities is Braith Anasta. My Dad once told me a story about how he saw Braith Anasta went into a bar expecting to get a free beer and when the bartender didn't recognise who he was, the first thing he said was "don't you know who I am?" He has a really big ego.
Cricket
* Mark Taylor - Having grown up during the 2000s when he, Tony Greig and Richie Benuard were in the commentators box for Nine's cricket coverage, for me at least, Mark Taylor's voice is synonymous with cricket. IMO, he is the best cricket commentator and analyst on Australian television.
* Ian Healy - He's okay.
* Michael Clarke - His very broad Australian accent can be a bit annoying at times (especially during commentary), but otherwise, he isn't too bad.
* Shane Warne - Not a fan of his commentating, in all honesty.

Don't really like him either, especially during the Aus Open. use her good looks to attract more male viewers back to the show Hahaha

Honestly, it really wouldn't have surprised me if that was in the minds of the executives at Nine. I'm not saying that was the sole reason for her appointment to the role, but the NRL Footy Show had been declining in ratings and the show had traditionally appealed to a male audience, so...it makes you wonder.
