Is it simply because they detract the heat during summer or do people genuinely prefer the look of white-coloured cars? You see so many white-coloured cars on the road now.

I think there definitely is an element of that - especially in Australia, but maybe white is the generic fleet colour? My father, who receives fleet cars, have almost always been white, with a couple being silver. Food for thought!

EVERYTHING shows up on them even if you could be bothered cleaning it everyday. First world problem, I know.

I don't think they're that popular. I see them just about as much as I see silver, black, red, blue, gold, gray, etc. colored cars.

Silver cars seem much more common to me.

Silver cars seem much more common to me. I actually see way more white vehicles here (quite a lot of them are old clunkers mind you). Silver, red, blue are probably the next most common I reckon. Some colours like green are rarely seen instead.

White and black are considered the most generic colors for dealers to stock. Other colors like blue are considered more polarizing, and therefore more of a reason for someone to not buy a car. I don't necessarily agree with this logic myself, as I've heard plenty of people express dislike for flat white and/or black. Luckily metallic silvers and grays are being considered increasingly neutral and are moving in on their territory.
