I was a sophomore in college that year. However, yes, the election was huge during the start of the school year, and this was my last school year as a teenager as well as the last before Fortnite came out.

It was definitely transitional. I was a sophomore, and my high school culture became a lot more PC after Trump's election victory.
People became a lot more hostile when they talk or get involved into politics, especially with the baseball field shooting that happened in the early summer of 2017.
Pop culture-wise?
The Nintendo Switch was highly anticipated and widely successful (Wish I had my own personal Switch).
Fidget spinners were briefly a trend for the summer.
Memes became increasingly surreal and had loud distortion associated with them.
Oh, and Despacito.

The school year with the last 90s babies in it, unless we are talking about the few late 99 babies who were born after the cutoff their school district enforced.
