Earlier this evening, I came across a thread created in July 2018 which was based on discussing who the most popular star of Gen Z was. It was interesting to read back on those posts, as since the last post was made back in Septepmber last year, it was before Billie Eilish had made a name for herself. Anyway, the thread got me wondering about how old all of the artists on the current Top-40 chart are, so I actually decided to make a list out of them to see if there is some sort of trend. The numbers are of where on the chart the artist's songs are placed, while the birth-years of the artists are in brackets: Billboard Hot 100: www.billboard.com/charts/hot-100/2019-10-121, 30. Lizzo (1988) 2. Shawn Mendes (1998) & Camila Cabello (1997) 3. Lewis Capaldi (1996) 4. Lil Tecca (2002) 5. Chris Brown (1989) & Drake (1986) 6. Billie Eilish (2001) 7, 9, 15, 35, 40. Post Malone (1995) 8, 10. Lil Nas X (1999) 9. Young Thud (1991) 10. Billy Ray Cyrus (1961) 11, 14. Ed Sheeran (1991) & Justin Bieber (1994) 12, 14. Khalid (1998) 13, 19, 20, 21, 26. DaBaby (1991) 15. Swae-Lee (1993) 16, 22. Jonas Brothers (1987, 1989 & 1992) 17. Rick Ross (1976) 18. SHAED (1989) 23. Wale (1984) & Jeremih (1987) 24. Same Smith (1992) 25. Megan Thee Stallion (1995), Nicki Minaj (1982) & Ty Dollar Sign (1985) 26. Lil Baby (1994) 27. Taylor Swift (1989) 28. Moneybagg Yo (1991) 29. Maroon 5 (1970, 1978 {x2}, 1979 {x3} & 1981). 31. Normani (1997) 32. Saweetie (1993) 33. Halsey (1994) 34. YNW Melly (1999) & 9lokknine (2000) 36. Ariana Grande (1993) 37. Gunna (1993) 38. Marshmello (1992) & Kane Brown (1993) 39. Blanco Brown (1988) 40. Ozzy Osbourne (1948) & Travis Scott (1991) 1940s - 1960s:Late '40s: 1 Artist Early '60s: 1 Artist Total: 2 Artists 1970s:Early '70s: 1 Artist Mid '70s: 1 Artist Late '70s: 5 Artists Total: 7 Artists * All bar one are members of Maroon 5. 1980s:Early '80s: 2 Artists Mid '80s: 3 Artists Late '80s: 8 Artists Total: 13 Artists 1990s:Early '90s: 11 Artists Mid '90s: 6 Artists Late '90s: 6 Artists Total: 23 Artists 2000s:Early '00s: 3 Artists Total: 3 Artists So it's interesting that even though the current pop culture is targeted towards Gen Z, people born in the Late '80s and Early '90s are responsible for most of the songs within the Top-40.

Apart from Lewis Capaldi, Jack Savoretti, John Ledin (son of Tomas), George Ezra and Gavin James, I like older musicians born before 1969.

I think I made a thread related to this on PerC years back. But basically there’s a pattern of generation “influencers” technically belonging to the generation prior. Though I will say, it actually makes a lot of sense that those in their twenties tend to be more the drivers of culture. Sure teens may consume with less hesitation and take it on as their identities, but most are just in school still figuring themselves out. Billie Eilish is the exception. So I don’t know, sometimes comments implying culture isn’t for 90’s borns anymore are kinda ridiculous to me.

I could've sworn Swae Lee was born in 1997. And I thought Normani was a 96er? Guess she really is a new-gen pop star. I think 5 years from now 96+ will dominate the charts and 2010s babies will slowly start to curate their own tastes.
