I was just thinking about how easy it was for me choose the 2010s in the "2000s vs 2010s" thread. It was only because the 2000s were a steaming pile of dung. But now that 2019 is coming to an end, I have to admit, I have a strong preference for 2009 over 2019. The former was unforgettable, with so many real cultural shifts (not the decadeology kind) that it really felt like we were heading into a new world. Most the changes were for the better: there was a greater acceptance for people who were different, weird, an appreciation for ironic self deprecation. Watch the movie 21 Jump Street if you want to know what I'm talking about. The early and mid 2010s took it all into it overdrive. In contrast I feel like we're headed in the opposite direction in 2019. I admit people with alternative colour hair and funny glasses are out of the norm but I die a little inside when people start harassment campaigns on social media or when autist is used as insult. As we have an eventual 2020 vs 2010 thread I'm really afraid 2010 is going to blow it out of the water. 2010 was a behemoth of a year; it's not even that old yet still fondly remembered if the "favourite 2010s year" thread is anything to go by. I guess it's important to just enjoy it a year instead of constantly comparing it to a rose-coloured version of the past, but it's becoming hard to be optimistic. Does anyone else feel this way?

I honestly think my personal life will be worse, while culture may get better. I hate 2010s culture overall, so i'll imagine that 2023+ could have decent pop culture.

I'm actually kind of excited for 2020, because even if only from an aesthetic point, I'm liking some of the trends I'm seeing creep in. But that was also my thought a decade ago so idk. I'm not really sure anything can top what seemed awesome back when I was 15.

I agree. I personally think 2009-2011 had far superior pop culture to 2016/7+. Like you said, it felt like things were really progressing then - cant say the same for the late 2010s!
In fact, over the last few weeks ive started to become really nostalgia for 2009.

I necessarily wouldn't call myself a "2010s lover" its just the early 2010s are what stand out the most to me than the mid or later part of the decade. Obviously I can't predict the future but I would say that the 2020s will get the exact same hate as the 2010s did. It's pretty much a cycle at this point where people are arguing about how the early 2020s or something were the worst and then fast forward a few more years and they suddenly start to worship it. I am not one of those people who praises the concept of hating one part of a decade and eventually overwhelm it with the sense of nostalgia. Take 2015 for example. I am probably one of the only two people on this forum who didn't like 2015 and to me that year will never be nostalgic for me same with 2017. Now of course this is just my opinion. Overall I'll just have to wait and see for myself to actually know if the 2020s will or will not compare what the 2010s had to offer.

I don't really understand, why exactly are you afraid of 2010 blowing 2020 out of the water? I think we should just wait and see how the beginning of the 2020's turn out before casting judgment. Pop culture is capable of changing rapidly and very drastically. I don't think anyone in 2010 could've predicted what would come in 2019 or even 2016.

I'm excited for the new decade to start but that's pretty much it. There's no doubt the culture (especially music) will only get worse from here on out.

It's interesting you say that because as a 2010's lover, I think it'll be the exact opposite. I feel like I'm gonna like 2020's music and pop culture even better than the 2010s. With politics though, that's a whole different story.

Today is literally Pronouns Day and people are becoming accepting of non-binary and gender fluid or whatever. I think it's safe to say we're more accepting than ever before. Probably even too accepting.

I don’t really care to be honest, the 2020s can be a continuation of the 2010s or a complete opposite, I’m fine as long as we keep improving stuff and progressing socially, medically, scientifically and with the arts!

We're just going through a real shit phase in history at the present time. There's no other way to describe it. I genuinely believe future generations will look back on us and our actions with a lot of disgust. Questionable politics aside, we've allowed the Amazon Rainforest to continue burning, we have seen a regression on the social progress made earlier in the decade, many cities/towns across the world are running out of water and we are doing little to minimise the effects of climate change.
I do believe things will change though and I know they will. Maybe not for another few years, but I can't see the Mid 2020s as having the same conservative, backwards-thinking atmosphere as the Late 2010s. I'm willing to give the 2020s a chance.
