I have a real good feeling that the 2020s could turn out to be something special. I mean, this is the first decade since the 1990s to actually have a PROPER name and I hope our culture really runs with that for the next 10 years. I don't know if it would bring in a return to the whole "decade culture" thing that we had from the 1920s-1990s but it would be great if the name alone helped bring a revival to that kind of thinking. And, since it's an election year, I'm positive that at least this year would deliver some interesting moments.

We're just going through a real shit phase in history at the present time. There's no other way to describe it. I genuinely believe future generations will look back on us and our actions with a lot of disgust. Questionable politics aside, we've allowed the Amazon Rainforest to continue burning, we have seen a regression on the social progress made earlier in the decade, many cities/towns across the world are running out of water and we are doing little to minimise the effects of climate change. I do believe things will change though and I know they will. Maybe not for another few years, but I can't see the Mid 2020s as having the same conservative, backwards-thinking atmosphere as the Late 2010s. I'm willing to give the 2020s a chance. I personally think the current era is going to be looked back on like the Jim Crow era. It's really had to believe how much has changed since 2015. It's like we are living in a completely different world and not in a good way. I know this is very political but in my opinion, you cannot separate the culture of the late 2010s form the politics. I really hope the Christian Right loses it's power and influence over our society in the near future but I am not optimistic. I wouldn't be surprised if the 2020s brings the end of legal abortion, the end of marriage equality, more imposed religion especially in the area of public education, and a return to cannabis prohibition in all 50 U.S states. If Trump wins again, this is a near certainty. Then again, things could change as Millennials/Gen Z replace boomers are the dominant voice in our society, but getting from here to there is going to be a problem. I think we are still at least another decade away from it. One thing I really worry about is Trump becoming a dictator and the subsequent collapse of U.S. democracy. If the Republican Party is going to protect him at any cost (and that's what they will do as long as he continues to give them anti-abortion, anti-gay judges), he might as well be a dictator. If Trump loses, that could be a serious problem as well as a large segment of Americans likely wouldn't accept his loss. I also think the 2020s are going to be an awful decade for the U.S. economy but how bad it will be is yet to be seen. I'm personally thinking it will be comparable to the 1970s, but an economic crisis like the 1930s or worse isn't out of the realm of possibility. In regards to climate change, I really hope the deniers are correct or at least that it won't be bad as some of the worst-case predictions I've heard. We could be looking at a real apocalyptic scenario and it won't be the Rapture. Hopefully I'm wrong about all of this and the current era will end up being just a speed bump on the road of progress, but I'm not super optimistic about that.

Imagine comparing today to a time where blacks and whites literally had to stay separated by law. As someone who's half black and noticeably brown, there's honestly never been a better time to be a minority in this country. The LGBT community is more accepted than ever before and interracial marriages are common now. Women don't have to cook and stay in the kitchen like they used to. Literally the only problem here is you're extremely pessimistic and you should probably talk to a therapist.

I understand you're scared of today's political climate & I dislike Trump too, but it's extremely dishonest to compare the present to the Jim Crow era. Many minorities had to fight for civil rights & the process was not easy. Even today, racism exists, however, it's not as extreme as it once was.

On second thoughts, I think Jim Crow is too extreme. This is more like the late 1960s would have been had Wallace won the 1968 election. We were very close back then to this kind of situation. There was a heavy backlash against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that persists to this day and is a big driver behind Trump. How it does compare is this is an era future generations will be ashamed of. I think people in 2050 will look back on the late 2010s like we do the 1950s; as a backwards, repressive era and also the time the U.S. went into irreversible decline, for no other reason than that the Bible thumpers couldn't deal with same-sex marriage.
Racism is a big part of Trumpism but Christian Nationalism is the backbone of it. It's about religion and the Christian Right realizing it's days are numbered so they are trying to ram as much through as possible, no matter the cost. They support Trump because he's rubber stamping it all.

Looks like you were proven right to have felt the way you did when you created this topic @slowpoke1993. This thread was only created back in October, yet it already seems like a lifetime ago when reading how positive and optimistic most of us were for the 2020s. It's actually kind of sad reading over these posts from a current context.

I will say that, 2010 was easily my favourite year of the decade, the culture just felt so fresh at the time. 2010 was also quite solid in a lot of aspects of pop culture such as, film, television and especially video games. Even though, I did not like the music, it felt like a new fresh breath of air atleast. 2019 on the other hand seems so worn out in comparison, the pop culture seems to be getting overdone (the same trends over and over) and the political and social scene is just a mess. I'm not trying to bash on 2019 but, it seems like the late 2010s are just kind of stale. I will say that 2019 seemed great in comparison to 2020 so far haha.
I have no idea what this decade is gonna be like but, I'm not exactly confident. So far, we have had quite a bumpy start to this decade but, a lot of fondly remembered decades do. I don't think the 2010s were bad at all but, it does seem like it started with a bang and then just got more stale as it went on (a bit like the 80s actually but, peaking around 1982 through 1984 and becoming extremely worn down by about 1988/1989).
This is just what I think though, and others will most likely have a different perspective than me.

The early 2010s did felt like progression, I actually felt the optimism and was low key hyped at the time. I strongly disliked 2018, 2019, now I see both years as very fun in comparison to current 2020. 2014, another year in the 2010s I also low key disliked, is amazing now.

Give me any year of the 2010s over 2020. For me, there’s been this deep sense of dread that catastrophe was coming since Trump was elected. I think we’ve all felt it. Trump supporters have felt it too, just they don’t blame Trump but instead liberals or God’s judgment. Regardless, the late 2010s really had a “calm before the storm” feeling. That was one of the reasons I hated them so much. I felt like I was racing against time to get stuff in my personal life worked out before the big event happened.
