So I am making this era official now due to all the talk about what happened in 2001. There was a small mini period that started in May 2001 (when the y2k era ended) and ended the week before the post 9/11 early 2000s era started.
It was not quite y2k and not quite post 9/11 early 2000s, it was this in between era that took up much the summer of 2001. I think of Shrek and launch of the Game Boy Advance as the things that stand out in this era. As for music, Teen pop was pretty much gone from the radio aside from Dirty Pop by Nsync and few of the previous years songs in rotation. We had some newcomers like Michele Branch, Sum 41 starting to take over the radio.

It's all early 2000s to me. If Shrek and Gameboy Advance came out in 2002 instead it wouldn't make a difference.

I've decided to lock this. Nothing wrong with speaking about certain pop culture eras and what defined them, but can we please lose the emphasis on the specific dates that these eras took place. May 2001 - September 2001 is Early 2000s pop culturally, whichever way you look at it. This thread is decadeology.
