The big "technological advancement" of the 2020s?

When you think about it, the 2010s owe an awful lot to the popularity of smartphones. So much of our current culture and ways of living, whether it be ordering a delivery through Uber Eats, posting a photo to Snapchat, or by simply accessing the internet without using a computer, all stems back to the breakthrough of smartphones right at the start of this decade. They were revolutionary in the sense that they offered a level of inter-connectivity which had never been seen before. It was now possible to catch up on the latest news, chat to people on the opposite side of the world, as well as text and call people, all by the touch of a finger. The 2010s would have panned out quite differently had smartphones never become as ubiquitous as they have.
With technology having experienced somewhat of a plateau over the past five years or so, it makes you wonder if this will continue on into the 2020s. For how much longer will we be still using smartphones and what will eventually come to replace them? What will be that next "big" technological advancement which has a high uptake and changes the way people go about their lives? Some people have cited autonomous cars as being the next massive game changer in terms of technology. I definitely believe they will be revolutionary in their own way and I can see them becoming standard in another ten years time, but I question the extent to which they will change people's day-to-day lives. People are still going to go about their same daily routines. I mean, the rate of car accidents may gradually decrease over time, but self-driving cars won't change the way in which we communicate with each other or purchase our necessities.
I'm of the opinion that the next "big thing" will actually be in the form of virtual reality. It seems almost inevitable that one day, somewhere down the track, we will be living and engaging in our own virtual worlds. As silly as this sounds, I've always thought that Blade Runner 2049 provides a pretty good insight as to what is to come in the 21st Century. What virtual reality will entail in the 2020s, it's hard to say at this point, but I wouldn't be surprised if holograms start to become a common feature on smartphones. I've heard that 5G technology has the potential capability of displaying holograms, so I don't think it's out of the ream of possibilities. I doubt that "virtual worlds" will be a thing in the 2020s; I still think we're a few decades away from that becoming a reality. However, in saying all that, I do believe virtual reality will play a much bigger role in technology over the next 5-10 years.
