My profile picture is of the cover of System of a Down's 2005 album, Mezmerize. I've personally been a huge fan of System of a Down's music since that album was released. I was too young to remember Toxicity and Steal This Album! when they were new, so Mezmerize was the album that introduced me to their output. It was through my Dad deciding to play the album in the car just after he had purchased it (which was only about a week after the album came out) that I was introduced to the band. I liked it so much that my Dad actually made me a custom compilation CD so that I could listen to the songs off Mezmerize when I was with my Mum. My favourite song off the album back then was "Old School Hollywood". Out of all the albums I liked as a kid, it's one of the very few that I still regularly listen to now. It's an album I hold a lot of nostalgia for.
Just out of curiosity, is anyone else on here a fan of their music? System of a Down were still hugely popular when their double album (Mezmerize and Hypnotize) came out, so they were relevant in the mainstream for quite a number of years. I remember "Lonely Day" was a reasonably big hit at the time.

From what I've heard, I like them. My junior nephew used to play them in the car and we used to join in with 'Violent Pornography'.

SOAD is one of the few bands that got me into nu metal. Most of their songs are really catchy and have a groove to them especially the ones off of Mezmerize. Even though they aren't super relevant as they were back in the late 90s and 2000s, they still remain as cool as ever to me. I do have to say though their first album is really underrated. It doesn't get much attention or love as Toxicity or Mezmerize do. The first time I was introduced to SOAD was my dad. He used to play big band names like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Metallica and so on but he also had a metal liking like Korn or Slipknot (don't listen to slipknot plus I don't consider them nu metal). Korn, SOAD and unfortunately Limp Bizkit all got me into nu metal as a young teen. If there was a favorite SOAD song I like it would be Toxicity. Chop Suey is pretty overrated so that's why it is not my favorite. Apart from that there is nothing more to say about this band except that they are one of my favorites to listen to.

To be honest, System of a Down would be one of the last bands I would have expected you to like. Chop Suey is pretty overrated so that's why it is not my favorite. Apart from that there is nothing more to say about this band except that they are one of my favorites to listen to. Ah okay, interesting! I agree that "Toxicity" is a great song, but I personally consider all of the songs off Toxicity to be excellent. I'm not really a huge fan of their debut album though. I like "Spiders" in particular, however I find the rest of the songs off their debut to be too eccentric and "wacky" for my liking. I might have to give it another listen one day (it has been a few years since I last listened to it). I'm more of a fan of their later albums ( Mezmerize is my favourite). He cops a lot of criticism from SOAD fans, but I actually like Daron Malakian as a vocalist and that instantly gives Mezmerize and Hypnotize an advantage over their earlier output for me. Serj and Daron compliment each other really well IMO. I also feel as though System of a Down were at their most diverse on both of those albums. You have zany, hard-rockers like "Cigaro" and "U-Fig", but then you also have more acoustic, alternative-rock driven songs such as "Soldier Side" and "Lost in Hollywood". It's a great blend.

This song is one of the reasons as to why I like System of a Down so much. I love how they could come up with completely wacky, nonsensical lyrics like the ones in "Vicinity of Obscenity", yet somehow pull it off without them being a detriment to the overall quality of the song. This is one of my favourite songs off Hypnotize. It's weird, but fun.
