Last night, I decided to listen to a few songs from my '10s Favourite Songs' Spotify playlist which I recently shared in a thread and by the time I stopped, I had listened to as much as twelve songs. It occurred to me that more than half the songs I chose to listen to were actually ones that have been released over the past 12 months. It makes a nice change from pretty much disliking the vast majority of new song releases in recent years. Anyhow, listening to those songs got me thinking about how 2019 has been a much better year for pop culture in general when compared to the other Late 2010s years (IMO) and it gave me the idea to create this "2019 Appreciation Thread", especially seeing as how we already had one for 2018.
What do you like about the pop culture of 2019?
Like I kind of hinted at above, from an overall context, I believe 2019 has been the best year for music in over five years. In fact, i'm even leaning towards considering it as being my favourite year for music this decade. There's quite a lot of songs released this year which I genuinely like, some of which have actually been big hits and others which have received some radio airplay, but have charted just outside the Top-40. These songs include (Top-40 hits are bolded):
* "Teeth" - 5 Seconds of Summer (a decent industrial-rock inspired track with Tom Morello on guitar.)
* "Someone You Loved" - Lewis Capaldi
* "Earfquake" - Tyler, The Creator
* "Hold Your Nerve" - Boy & Bear
* "Loner" - YUNGBLUD
* "Gave You Everything" - The Interrupters
* "Hold My Girl" - George Ezra
* "Circles" - Post Malone
* "Castles" - Freya Ridings
* "Cross Off" - Mark Morton ft. Linkin Park
* "Be Here" - Tori Forsyth
2019 has also had far fewer songs which I flat-out loathe. I don't exactly care for the "country-Trap" trend which has been popular this year, but I can appreciate "Old Town Road" and "The Git Up" for what they are. They're not instant station-changer songs for me. The same applies for most of the other big hits in 2019, to be frank. Songs such as "Slide Away", "3 Nights", "Motivation", "Lights Up" and "One Thing Right" are all okay, but not songs which I would say I "like" or see myself ever wanting to return to. I think the only songs from this year which I have no appreciation for whatsoever would have to be "Memories", "Ride It", "Ransom" and Tones and I's singles bar "Johnny Run Away". Even then, as horrible as they may be, I still consider them to be better than the crap that was coming out last year such as "God's Plan" and "Girls Like You".
In any case, my opinion has definitely changed from what it was back in June.
