I noticed in my Twitter feed about ten minutes ago that today happens to mark a decade since ABC3 was launched (jeez, has it really been that long). I can still remember what I was doing when the channel launched for the first time; I was at my Grandparents house and I distinctively remember going into the sun-room, turning on the TV in there, and waiting in anticipation for the channel to start broadcasting. Anyhow, I thought this might actually make for an interesting topic. Most of us who frequent this sub-forum are media-enthusiasts, but even to the members who aren't, do you have any memories of watching TV stations go on the air for the first time?
Here is a list of station launches I can remember: * Nick Jnr (2004): Launched a day after my 5th birthday. I didn't actually watch the channel launch itself, but I remember when the channel had been added to Austar and was brand new. I've never watched a show on Nick Jnr. By the time the channel launched in March 2004, I had mostly stopped watching pre-school targeted shows, so there has never been an incentive for me to watch it. * Playhouse Disney (2005): Same as the reason stated above. I can remember checking "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" once when I was 7 out of curiosity, however I was "too old" for that show. * New Channels such as 111 Hits, Lifestyle You etc. being added to Austar during 2008. * One HD (2009): It launched on the 2nd July here in Regional NSW. Being the massive TV geek that I was, in the evenings, I would quite often leave the HD-demonstration "scenic" loop on (which aired on LCN 50 before the channel officially launched) in the background for an hour or two at a time while I drew comics in books. * SBS Two (2009): Watched it in my bedroom when it launched at 6pm. I'm pretty sure I recorded it onto tape, but I think the tape itself is missing. * GO! (2009): I actually had a friend over at my house at the time and I stayed in my bedroom watching/recording the launch of GO! onto VHS while he was in another room in the house playing my PS2, lol. Some friend I was. * ABC3 (2009): Mentioned above. * 7Two on Prime (2009): Just happened to stumble across it when I woke up on the morning of the 23rd December and was flicking through the channels on the loungeroom TV. * 7Mate (2010): Watched the launch on our loungeroom TV. I'm almost certain that I recorded it onto camera, but I can't remember now. * Eleven (2011): Watched and recorded the launch

I think I remember seeing most of the launches of FTA digital multichannels over the past decade or so, including 9Life in 2015.
Missed out on seeing the SBS Food Network relaunch because I would've been travelling at the time. Didn't see the launches of Your Money (although I did see that channel close down!) or 7Food Network either.

One HD (2009) - I had just got a digital tv for the first time a month before, but was sad it replaced Ten HD. I remember the countdown well. 7mate (2010) - I was watching 7HD that day as a certain popular telecast was on that afternoon... Then when the news was about to start the channel began. ABC News 24 (2010) - Technically I didn't see the channel's first newscast, but I saw the moment ABC HD switched to an ABC News 24 promotional loop (there was a minute or so of a black screen, then the promos played) Eleven (2011) - I remember it was a mild overcast day when it launched I recorded it but didn't bother uploading it since there's already a few on YouTube. IMO it was the best launch out of all the ones I've seen. Fox Footy (2012) - I remember getting annoyed seeing how ugly the watermark was TV1 to TVHits (2013) - I didn't watch it but I recorded it since the NYE telecast was on at 12am I think its still on my YouTube channel. There's a few other channels I watched several hours after they began (but not when they launched), including GO!, 7TWO, ABC3 and some other Foxtel channels.

I remember being away in Northern Victoria when Eleven was launched on the 11th January 2011. I remember attempting to check it out early in the day, not knowing that it was beginning at 11:00am. I missed the launch, the first show I remember seeing on there was Macgyver.
The only channel launch (technically a relaunch) I remember was ABC Comedy in 2017. I think I was too young to really know about (or care about) the other relaunches from the late 2000s.
The fact that ABC3 launched 10 years ago is insane, that time has really gone quick!

Although some of them didn’t launch on the exact dates of the metro versions (the perks of living regionally I guess!), I have memories of most of the recent digital channels being launched except for ABC3, SBS TWO, 7food and 7flix, the last two for obvious reasons. Remembering a bit further back, I have clear memories of the afternoon of December 31, 2003 when Tasmanian Digital Television (TDT10 now Channel 9) was officially launched at 4pm with proper content (indeed there was a placeholder test pattern airing on it for the previous couple of weeks before it started airing Ten’s programmes on this date). Just thinking back, and although not a launch as such, I also remember the day Southern Cross TV relaunched with their new star logo on June 19, 2005 at 6.30pm, as part of a SCB network relaunch. I also have vague memories of their relaunch in 2000 with the tiger logo (easily their best logo design and presentation by the way!), but I was young and not as interested in such things at this stage to fully take notice.

I wonder what that “certain telecast” was on Seven that afternoon?! We didn’t receive ONE HD or 7mate (same goes for 7TWO too) on the same dates as you metro viewers. Just looking back through my archive, Tassie received ONE on July 30 (Ten launched it on March 26), 7mate on October 24 (Seven launched it on September 25) and 7TWO on December 1 (Seven launched it November 1). Not that it really worries me all that much, but SCA have not yet picked up 7flix or 7food.

I gathered as much. 7food will be closed early next year it seems and if I really wanted to watch anything on 7flix I could just stream it anyways. I can’t wait for 7mate to go HD again though!

Half of the time, our antenna kept failing. It was kind of funny. I think it was called Superstation then. I dont know where Superstition came from. It was like grownup sitcoms similiar to Everybody Loves Raymond and the 70s show.
