My local council is currently holding it's annual "Carols by Candelight" event tonight, which is a Christmas carol public event that has a fireworks display at the end. Many councils across NSW have been choosing to cancel their NYE fireworks displays this year due to the current bushfire threat. Seven bushfires are at emergency level across the state right now and we are also going through a severe drought; Level 2 water restrictions come into effect here in four days time. There are some towns in NSW which have ran out of water completely.
Many people are now calling on the Sydney NYE fireworks display to be scrapped this year as well. Firefighters have been on duty for months trying to control the fires and with the huge task at hand, they are becoming fatigued from having to work around the clock. New Zealand and Canadian firefighters have even been deployed over here to assist in controlling them. The decision to cancel fireworks displays has obviously received mixed responses. Some are saying that it's the sensible thing to do, while others are criticising the government/organisers for ruining "family-friendly entertainment" and taking the joy out of the festive Christmas/NYE period.
What's your opinion on this? If an area/state is going through a severe drought and a total fire ban, should fireworks displays still be permitted? Do they cause any harm?
Personally, i'm glad that they are being called off. It's entirely plausible for an ember from the fireworks to suddenly ignite into a fire.

Interesting. Wasn’t aware of this thread.
Not that I can see it happening, but I wonder if the New Year’s fireworks in Sydney will be cancelled or something as conditions for Tuesday are expected to be extreme...
In other news, Canberra’s New Year’s fireworks have been cancelled due to extreme conditions predicted for tomorrow and Tuesday.

I doubt that it will happen either, but if a total fire ban is called for NSW on New Years Eve, I think it may force their hand. Gladys Berejiklian (our premier) has already held a press conference saying that the fireworks will go ahead regardless. I guess we'll see what happens.

I would agree with cancelling it. It's very dangerous to be taking your kids outside in smog conditions as it is, nothing "family friendly" about it.
