This topic will cover the genre that dominated the 2010s, EDM.
2010: David Guetta came into the scene with his electro house hits Sexy Chick, Club Can't Handle Me, and Memories, which signals that EDM will dominate the majority of the 2010s. Build-ups and drops were increasingly apparent with songs like Only Girl, Like a G6, and Dynamite.
2011: EDM continued to explode in the charts and influencing pop music. Dubstep also came into the scene and was everywhere. Any upbeat club banger you heard this year were influenced by EDM music. Artists like Calvin Harris and LMFAO jump started the EDM boom that'll absolutely dominate the next few years.
2012/2013: Both of these years were the absolute peak of EDM. The build-ups and drops were everywhere. Dubstep was everywhere. It was dominated by DJ"s like Calvin Harris, David Guetta, Martin Garrix, Avicii, Swedish House Mafia, and Zedd.
2014: Even though this was a big year for EDM, it certainly got a little more chopped n screwed with the new genre that peaked in 2014, Trap EDM. Songs like Dark Horse and Turn Down For What made vocal chops and adding southern hip hop elements mainstream in EDM. Deep House also came into the scene with a more smooth and chill songs like Latch, Hideaway, Rather Be, Waves, and Prayer In C.
2015/2016: Both years were soft rock moments for EDM. Tropical House came into the scene and made EDM have a softer and vibey sound. Songs like Cheerleader, Firestone, Fast Car, This Girl, Took a Pill in Ibiza, Lean On, and any song that Justin Bieber was in epitomized the sound of both years. The Chainsmokers also made EDM have a more safer and poppier sound.
2017: This year was when EDM started to decline in the charts. Although, there were still occasional Tropical House and Chainsmoker songs in the first half of 2017, there came a new genre of EDM called Future Bass. This genre is characterized by wonky melodies and soft drops. It was popularized by Flume"s Never Be Like You and many DJ's like Zedd, Marshmello, Martin Garrix, and Swedish House Mafia began to use the sound with songs like Stay, Alone, Scared To Be Lonely, and More Than You Know.
2018: This was the last year when EDM was on the charts. Future bass continuted to rule the EDM scene with songs like FRIENDS, Happier, In My Mind, and The Middle. You could still hear house songs like One Kiss and Nevermind.
2019: EDM is no longer the popular genre.

EDM is still more popular than its given credit for. Illenium and Alan Walker have had a great couple of years. The Chainsmokers are still relevant. I agree though that the genre isn’t what it once was. Today, most EDM doesn’t sound too different from pop.

Yup. I fucking knew it. This is why 2019 music sucks! No EDM, no happiness, no dancey feeling. We need a Trap demolition night, I'm sick and tired of mumble rap brainwashing children! We need something happier than just Billie Eilish-inspired Alt-Pop or Indie! It is just too depressing, and making kids depressed. I do like her, not gonna lie, it's just that the charts really are lacking diversity right now, it's all trap or Alt-pop.

I mean- not all Trap music is bad, I kinda like Dababy, at least hes not a mumble rapper, it's just that the beat is way too overused and annoying. No wonder why the 2019 YouTube rewind was so bad because of the lack of motivation to actually make it better, its just a top 10 list! And I think the lack of EDM contributes to this.

EDM always puts me in a good mood when I listen to it and so glad it was popular in this decade. I will never understand the hate for the genre.

To me, it is so fun, I do understand the hate though, people say it is lazy, lyricless, and repetitive, but I get offended when people talk shit about EDM. It is a fun, feel-good genre that makes me happy. However, thanks to these fucking mumble rappers/pop artists who just further amplified Trap's popularity, EDM died. This is what popular high school kids are brainwashed to, Trap music! I'm getting really sick and tired of Trap music being further amplified and people not thinking its annoying. Nowadays, whenever you say you listen to EDM in your high school class, you'll get clowned because they're brainwashed, I hate 2019 music!

First of all, I always hated when people started using EDM as the catch-all phrase for all electronic music. Back in the 2000s, there was trance, house, techno, etc and there are significant differences between the genres. Second of all, it's always been kind of a niche genre and rarely has electronic music enjoyed the kind of popularity it did from 2008 through around 2016.

As a few others mentioned, that was one of the best genres I enjoyed throughout this decade. The music was mainly optimistic, and it was played everywhere at clubs, bars, malls, etc.

I think the culture is primed for a new rock era (not a revival of a previous genre or comeback of old bands) that will become the sound of the 2020s. Music was very different in 1993 than it was in 1989. I think we are going to see the 2020s take a similar path. We had to get through the doo-wop era to get to the Beatles and we had to get through the hair metal era to get to the grunge era. I think music in 2019 is at a similar place.
