Here's one people had expecting a comeback for years now. It's alright but I'm so tired of this type of super minimal piano ballad that's clogging the adult contemporary waves. Like other instruments exist too? That song stinks lmao... Where'd the hook??? Where's*

In their recent album, Bruno Mars finally dives into the pure 70s.

Throwbacks, Boring ballads, 10s holdovers
This year is, without a doubt, one of the most boring years for popular music
There's nothing really sufficiently new, it's all just throwbacky and basic
Even 2017-2019 was more interesting
It's true that music in 2021 is less... Stupid(?) Than music circa 2010-2018, but that's because it's boring, inoffensive, identityless

Music has been in its best state in over 11 years rn, aside from the 80s throwbacks, pop punk has breathed new life

I kinda stopped following mainstream music altogether this year. Besides maybe the surprise hit that was Olivia Rodrigo earlier this year (although I already forgot how "Diverse License" sounds like), and a few other surprises here and there, this was a pretty boring year overall for music. It seems stuck between late 2010s holdovers and way too much throwback music.
Even 2020, as bad as that year was for music, was at least entertaining to follow thanks to all the dreck that was produced back then.

Honestly, the second half of 2021 felt so dry that one of the most exciting releases so far is a rerecord of an almost decade-old album from Taylor Swift.

Lol, Taylor Swift somehow managed to top the Billboard with a 10 minutes pop rock re-recording of a 2012 song. The longest song to ever do so in fact (beating "American Pie" from 1972), in an era where most popular songs clock at 2 minutes. Quite impressive

I thought we were leaving this type of nondescript trappy indie pop in the late 2010s. Why is this blowing up now?

If this came out in 2007 it would prob be buried at the bottom of any random band's album and nobody would care. Though I'm not actually hating on it, I'm just amused and always glad to see rock coming back in whatever form.
The kids becoming emo at the end tells me that it's gonna continue to be brought back for a new generation. Or at least that they'll try.

Apparently "Heat Waves" is rumoured to top the Billboard next week, making it the song with the longest climb to the top in the chart's history (it came out in June 2020).
Ugh, apparently the last glam metal band to top the Billboard chart was in early 1992 so hopefully this also marks the end of this airy nondescript indie trend that sounds like nothing, which took over alternative radio in the second half of the 2010s.

I think it’s because there’s a lack of new hits right now.
