How so? Most of these 2013 hits don’t sound like they belong in 2016. The Fox, Let Her Go, and Timber can easily fit in with 2011-2012. The Fox feels more 2014 or 2015 than 2011 or 2012. To me it'd feel out of place for that song to be in 2012. It has aggressive synths just like electropop/Early 2010s EDM. Listen to Party Rock Anthem and listen to how similar The Fox is to it.

It's more early 2010s then Royals though

I agree. Late 2016 even wasn't a huge difference. Ehh, kinda. In late 2016, as soon as the 2016-2017 school year started, it's like things shifted. Music got a little bit darker, the Weeknd went for a darker mood with Starboy, EDM got a little tamer if you listen to Starving by Zedd, and Mumble rap took over pop and EDM. iOS 10 got released, and while its mostly identical to iOS 7-9, it is more on the bubbly side instead of just full on flat. Movies got a little darker with Arrival and Suicide Squad. Then, the darkening process was complete by November when Trump got elected, Vine announcing their shutdown, PS4 Getting released, Stranger Things, you get the idea. thats why I have it stop around mid September 2016 from then on it was a new era numerically as well the late 2010s started

How would you view these songs from late 2013 whether they fit in with more early, mid 2010s, or both. -Counting Stars: Kinda both -Timber: Slightly leans early 2010s -The Fox: More early 2010s -Royals: Mid 2010s definitely -Demons: Kinda both -The Monster: Early 2010s, this is basically Love The Way You Lie part 2. -Let Her Go: Both, it can also fit in with the 2000s -Love Me Again: Both

Pretty much none of those songs would feel like an early 2010s song

Mid 2010s because Trump wasn't president yet. But it was the beginning of culture today.

The entire stretch from Obama's re-election in November 2012 to the end of 2016 was all pretty similar in my opinion. I feel icky grouping 2016 with 2012-2014. The mood was very different. It happened before Trump. In late 2014/early 2015 there was BLM riots, those ISIS attacks and the Syrian Refugee Crisis. At the time I hoped it was just an unfortunate string of events but it ended up defining the rest of the 2010s. This was a reply I wrote to you back in 2015. Sadly it ended up being true. I don't think I could have written it in December 2014, but in December 2015 the fear was all too real. www.inthe00s.com/index.php?topic=50714.msg3324822#msg3324822"I see some roots of the late 2010s taking place with the extreme rise in xenophobia this year, especially with the Syrian refugee crisis. It might be a late 2010s thing but it might be too early to say, it might be just a blip." I agree. 2016 is mid 2010s but not the same as 2013/14 which is why ive always felt like there were two mid 2010s eras: Mid 2013-Early 2015: The much brighter, hipster, Obama mid 2010s Mid 2015-Mid 2017: The darker, terrorist, Trump mid 2010s (this time also had alot more gen z artists appearing)

I would say that June 26, 2015 SCOTUS decision legalizing same-sex marriage was the dividing point.

Mid-2010s. I remember that Obama was still the president (even though he would be a lame duck anyways later on), Vine was still a thing, memes were becoming more mainstream on social media, (especially with the heightened tensions of the 2016 election and Brexit), and Pokémon GO was a brief phenomenon.

But it wasnt until May 2013 when the Electropop Era truly ended, and September 2013 when Mid 2010s culture started. January and September 2013 feel completely 180, its not like things would shift by the end of the Mayan calendar lol, but I also agree that there was a mild shift in September 2016...

Those things I bolded aren't necessarily mid-2010s but they're core 2010s trends. Hipsters gained attention in 2011 and Trap started to creep in 2011 as well:

I would say the early 2010s completely died whenever ARTPOP flopped. Lady Gaga's superstardom was a defining aspect of the early 2010s. We haven't had a superstar on that level since.
