Toonami was a block that started out in 1997, it wouldn't explode in popularity until 2000. When people think of Toonami they think of either 2 things, Gohan Killing Cell or Trunks slicing Frieza in half. By the year 2000 everyone and their dog was watching Toonami. Toonami is still on the air today but I want to focus on it's rise and fall.
The peak of Toonami right here
The Decline
In the slow summer of 2001 The WB network (parent company of Cartoon Network) decided to bring Toonami over to kids WB! Meaning Toonami was run on 2 channels at the same time. By this point popularity for Toonami started to wane, and by December 2001 ratings fell.
In 2004 Toonami was moved to Saturdays and Miguzi took its weekday place, it was at this time Toonami took on a Cult like following once again, the people who watched Dragon Ball still watched Toonami but it was not as popular as it was in the early 2000s. The block was canceled in 2008 and brought back in 2012 where it stays today.

I only remember watching Toonami in 2008 or so, which was the last time we'd see Toonami until 2012, and even then the block came back as an older teenagers and adult block, and I was ten years old.

Naruto put Toonami back on the map, 2005 was a excellent turn point for the lineup, it maybe wasn't as popular but was still popular in its own way.

I used to watch a lot of Toonami (Heck, CN in general it was my favorite channel then) back in the summer of 2000. Mainly for DBZ. I remember Toonami being on in the afternoons back then.
By the way does anybody remember Sunday nights on Cartoon Network before Adult Swim came out?
Like the Tex Avery show, Toonheads, Space Ghost, O Canada!, and Late Night Black and White?
And remember when they elected Scooby-Doo as president of CN that year?
