Cases are worryingly soaring in the US. After Europe it's pretty clear where the next main hub of infection is located. Portugal, Brazil, Turkey and Malaysia all have alarming growths in cases too. I hate how the Netherlands are doing their own thing with the whole "collective immunity development". Which means just let the virus spread so the people develop the antibodies. What a terrible concept with a virus that is pretty deadly. The UK also wanted to go in that direction, but decided otherwise when they saw their death count aggravating.

I don't want to jinks it, but Italy's rate of infection and deaths seems to be slowing down. Not in terms of total cases, but if you look at the percentages, it's slowing down. They shut Lombardy down on the 9th I believe, and it's almost roughly 14 days of incubation later now. We could probably start to see them "flatten the curve" over the next couple of days.

Sunday, 22nd March 2020:
* There are 305,234 confirmed cases worldwide, with 13,004 having died and 92,296 recovered. * 84 million people are now in lockdown in the United States. 25,493 there have contracted the coronavirus. * The British Government has asked it's citizens to stay in their homes for up to 12 weeks. * The Australian Government has announced that all "non-essential travel should be cancelled", along with a new economic stimulus package. * NSW and Victoria are seeking a ban on all non-essential activities, which would mean pubs, restaurants and clubs. Victoria also wants to shut down schools from this Tuesday.
Victoria is going on school holidays from the end of this week, if i'm not mistaken? So if they do decide to shut down schools from this Tuesday, they would possibly only be getting four extra days off anyway.

Some more big news coming out of Australia:
* The AFL has decided to suspend it's current season until the 31st May. That means no matches or training sessions will be held for the next 10 weeks. * Western Australia has announced that it will be closing it's borders, coinciding with the Northern Territory, Tasmania and South Australia. * The ACT is looking to follow NSW's lead by banning all non-essential activities from Tuesday. Schools in the ACT will also be closed starting in two days time. * PM Scott Morrison has revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic will be "the toughest economic situation we've likely seen since the Great Depression". * The NRL has announced it's intentions to continue on with it's current season, that's despite non-essential travel now effectively prohibited.

It's really sad what Italy's going through. 793 dead and 6,557 new cases - all in one day. And they have a world-class health system. The country is in a worst-case scenario right now, and I give Italians there all of my sympathies.

Why the fuck is Italy getting so many new cases and deaths when I thought they shut the whole country down?? Is the virus polluting the air?

Why the fuck is Italy getting so many new cases and deaths when I thought they shut the whole country down?? Is the virus polluting the air? The disease takes several days to show the very first symptoms. And even in incubation you're still perfectly able to infect other people. Also Italy's culture plays a role in it: ie family values are extremely important for them and as such many family members live closely or even together which makes passing the virus easier. Spain has a fairly similar culture and is also knowing a similar explosion in cases.

Why the fuck is Italy getting so many new cases and deaths when I thought they shut the whole country down?? Is the virus polluting the air? It's actually slowing down. Today's numbers were really encouraging. Only a 10% increase, compared to the 20-25% increases it was seeing before. And yep, like Telso said, incubation period is anywhere from a few days to even a month, so some people are infected but don't show symptoms or get tested until much later.

Can I have a source for that? I need to confirm before I start getting hope and then realizing I was wrong and ending up disappointed again.

Look at the percentage increase instead of total increase, it's slowing down since the lockdown on March 8th.

New Zealand, once again showing Australia how it's done. It's seeing things like this which makes me hate the Australian public more and more.
