I’ve been thinking about songs titled after or about a year and whether they’re actually a good representation of the time or just using it as filler.
In the 70’s there was already a longing for a simpler time, and I have to assume that was part of the intention here. Except it strikes me more as disco leaning than it does early 60’s.
There’s virtually nothing here that strikes me as late 60’s. This is pure MTV poppy rock. But, the lyrics are evocative of a dreamy past summer regardless. It’s been said however this song was never about the year 1969 but umm, use ypur imagination.
Well this is just painfully 2000’s, but I’m not mad. You can draw a lot of comparisons between then and the 80’s. It’s unapologetic and could be seen as obnoxious in too serious of a light. Just like 1985.
This song has literally nothing to do with 1994, unless you count throwing out the name of a random country singer who wasn’t even that prominent.
Even though this is so 80’s, 1999 did have its own club scene I could see this song being played at. The end of the world scare did become iconic to the year.
While you can’t say this song sounds early 00’s, I’m also not sure if it came out then if anyone would’ve been like “guess you guys aren’t ready for that yet.” It blends in a dreamy retrospective way, even if the songs dropped in the lyrics were already stale by 02.
If there are more songs I haven’t thought of, let me know.

I find a lot of songs based on certain years to be awfully stereotypical, like they will single out a trend remotely associated with the time and stretch it out to ridiculous proportions. "...Baby One More Time" wasn't even released in the Early 2000s, yet it's referenced during the chorus of Anne-Marie's "2002". Artists generally don't do the years they are focusing on any justice. If you're going to dedicate a song to a year, at least do your research or make it make sense for crying out loud!
Here are a few others:
Thanks for focusing on my birthyear Charlie XCX, but Prince did it better.

SharksFan99 If we wanna be really particular, both Charli XCX and Anne Marie are wrong because "hit me baby one more time" was released in 98. Lol. And the Titanic was 97. Not that I think it necessarily matters because it's more about the vibe of the year, but it's a critique you set yourself up for if you're gonna sing about a bunch of cliches. I do love a good nostalgia song but that version of 1999 was not it lmao.

It seems most of the pop culture references in the "1999" music video weren't from 1999?

that dude looks like a mixture of Kurt Cobain with a Hanson brother^ Not only that but Eminem's "The Real Slim Shady", the Nokia 3310, and "The Sims" were all released in 2000. It seems most of the pop culture references in the "1999" music video weren't from 1999? Yeah that's actually worse than just using old stuff lmao. Like you're gonna go to 99 to wait for the future? It seems pretty clear they recorded that just to get in on the y2k revival early, there's really no other substance.

Ironically though, people used to actually compare Silverchair with both Nirvana and Hanson back in the '90s, because they were a Grunge band with very young members. Silverchair were only 15 when they made it big in 1994.

Also a lot of eurobeat remake songs have the year in the title:

You don't find out until towards the end that the song is about being a baby in 1983. I replace all the "1983" in the lyrics with 1993 and I got an anthem
