I reckon the 1980s are a pretty retro decade and rightfully fits in more with the 20th century (only the decades after the 2nd world war of course) rather than the early 21st century. Considering the 1980s still had the Cold War (which went on for roughly 43 years in the 20th century), the decade looks very dated at the instant you see an image or video from it, the 1980s were still a MOSTLY analog decade rather than digital, it's also still pre-internet (for like over 99% of the general population) and there is still more stuff I can bring up. I think time makes these differences from to today the more the years stack up against it. Its the small things aswell. The 80s aren’t are close to being the new 50s. I would honestly argue that life of the 80s was closer to the 50s than it is to today. Especially when you take the whole world into consideration too. Btw, this is not to say that the 50s & 80s were the same (because they definitely weren't).

I think the gap between the 70s and the 90s is even bigger

Yeah the great shift of 1964 really changed the world entirely.

the difference between the 50s and the 70s is even bigger, If I were to tank the biggest gaps of the 20th century it would be
1910s-1930s Start of modern world 1950s-1970s End of midcentury and post-wwII era 1960s-1980s same as above 1900s-1920s Cars, wwI, planes 1920s-1940s interwar period 1940s-1960s wwII vs post-wwII 1970s-1990s late 20sth century, start of computers and the internet
Overall every 20 year jump was big

I now think that about the '80s vs. the '00s. As much as it made sense then that the '80s were 20 years ago, the '00s don't feel that old, which feels weird in hindsight.

The 2000s VS 2020s right now feel 20 years ago. However I think that may change once 2025 comes along, unless the whole world changes before next year. I feel 2004 is the last year that feel like it's 20 years ago. I do agree though that the 2000s vs 80s felt like a bigger gap. Mainly because of the Internet. The Internet changed everything.
