This thread was inspired by a conversation I had on another website and I thought it'd be interesting to discuss here since there seemed to be a lot of different opinions. Do you think 2012 was culturally more like 2007 or 2017?
Personally, I believe 2012 is more like 2017 and for a lot of reasons:
-In 2007, the iPhone was extremely rare. It was a luxury. It was still common to use flip phones. In 2012, iPhones got more popular, and by 2017 they are very popular.
-Social media in 2007 was mostly Myspace. In 2012, that changed to Facebook, and Instagram was just starting to catch up. In 2017, Instagram is popular.
-In 2007, most of the fashion was emo and scene, which was mostly gone by 2012 and eventually changed to hipster.
-2012 is arguably the first year that is firmly a 2010's cultural year since it was the first year electropop saw a decline, but it still remained popular.
-2012 was the year more shootings started happening, such as the Trayvon Martin shooting and the Sandy Hook shooting. A lot of this set the tone for how 2017 would be. In 2007, it was rarer (with the exception of the Virginia Tech shooting)

Most definitely 2017. So many technological & cultural changes happened between the years 2007 & 2012, such as the iPhone & the iPad, that changed the technological world of 2012 & after in ways that were unimaginable in the late 2000s. Sociologically, Barack Obama came out in support of LGBT marriage & Macklemores famous hit "Same Love" truly changed the perception of LGBT folks. We've come a long way since 2007.

BRUH THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS CAUSE I COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT THIS. Damn, I wish I added this as a reason as to why 2012 was more like 2017 because I actually mentioned that before not too long ago in another thread talking about the differences between 2008 and 2012. I feel like 2012 was the year LGBT acceptance was starting to go up. Like you can tell the world was starting to become more accepting of them at the time. 2012 was a lot more liberal than 2007 IMO.

2017 because 2012 is when the 2010s formed their identity.

I feel like 2011 was more changeful than 2012. I remember it was very different from 2007.

I feel like 2011 was the quintessential early 2010's year since late 2000's culture was mostly gone (with some exceptions), but at the same time it wasn't core 2010's yet.

2017, due to the impact of social media and the smartphone alone.

Not even 2011 has much in common with 2007. It wasn't even a quintessential late 2000s year, It had a lot of mid 2000s stuff hanging around. Compare these songs of the same artist from 2007 and 2011 and the differences are staggering:

2017. Something else that hasn't been mentioned is the difference in the popularity of rock. Rock was still huge back in 2007; "Lips of an Angel", "Girlfriend" and "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race" were some of the biggest hits of the year. Emo was at it's peak in popularity. The fact that there were teenagers who even took their own lives due to partaking in a rock sub-culture really goes to show how much of a different world 2007 truly was to 2012.

2017 no contest, smartphones, social media and tablets we're already mainstream by 2012 but in 2007 not so much.

2017. Streaming services were taking off in 2012, smartphones became more available, and EDM was at its peak/golden age.
