I was going to base this topic on the year 2006 at first, seeing as how it generally leaves people feeling divided, however I feel as though it has been well covered. Instead, I've decided to create a thread asking everyone what their opinion is of 2009 when it comes to music. It was quite a significant year for the Top-40 music scene; Lady Gaga had rose to stardom and became a household name, electropop was gaining more and more traction in the mainstream, Taylor Swift achieved international fame for the first time with the release of "Love Story" and rock was falling further into irrelevancy.
What is your opinion of music from 2009? Would you consider it as being your favourite year for music from the Late 2000s, or perhaps even the 2000s decade? Do you like a lot of songs from that year?

I've hummed and harred over these past couple of years as to what I would consider to be my least favourite '00s year for music overall, 2006 or 2009. However, I've ultimately settled on 2009 as being the year which I personally dislike the most and there's a few reasons for that. Even though 2009 is now eleven years ago (incredible to think about) and I was just a 10 year old kid at the time, there's honestly very little from 2009 which I feel sentimental about. It's honestly not a year which I have much nostalgia for at all really, whether that's simply because I had entered into my late childhood at that time or it's a reflection on the substandard quality of the year itself, i'm not sure. I did fall out of touch with music around the beginning of 2009 though. When "My People" by The Presets (a huge electropop hit here in Australia) became a Top-20 hit around the turn of 2009, that was the moment which made me think that music had gone downhill. I could never take to electropop. It just wasn't a genre of music that ever appealed to me, and I hated the fact that my favourite genre (rock) was seemingly dying a slow death at the same time. The rock songs that were hits in 2009 weren't particularly that good either. I like "Gives You Hell" by the All-American Rejects now, but I can remember feeling indifferent towards the song at the time as it was overplayed and I didn't think of it as being any different to generic pop-rock on the radio. I've never liked Muse's "Uprising", not have I ever been into Green Day's "21 Guns" or "Know Your Enemy". I can distinctively remember thinking that Orianthi's "According To You" sounded like a Disney Channel song, which is the only reason why I wasn't a fan of it back then. Of course, as is the case with almost every year though, there are some songs from 2009 which I like. Bluejuice's "Broken Leg" was my favourite song back then. I asked my Mum to search for the song on Limewire and iTunes at the time, however I never knew what the name of the song (or the artist) was and it wasn't until I happened to browse through a few ARIA Charts from 2009 nine years later that I actually discovered what the name of it was. Some songs from back then which I like: {Spoiler}
Yeah, not much.

There are only 2 songs from 2009 I remember because they are the only songs I liked namely 'It's Rocking' by Indian actress Kareena Kapoor and 'Hall Ut' by Tomas Ledin. I had completely lost interest long before 2009.

Nah, the best year for music in the late 2000s for me is 2007 but I definitely miss 2009 Drake.

I’d say I have a favorable opinion. After 2 years of sparsely listening to top 40 radio the previous couple of years. I started listening more in late 2008 and especially 2009. I guess it probably has to do with the fading of ringtone rap, post grunge, and bland pop. And the start of electropop and more indie sounds. Hip Hop was changing too stuff like “Day N’ Nite” by Kid Cudi sounded completely different to the ringtone rap of only a year and a half earlier.

I'd take 2009 over 2020, economy and all. The 2008-09 Great Recession was pretty mild compared to what we're about to have. I've never been this terrified about the future in my life. 2009 was a "golden year" for me.
I've gone back to weed because things are so rough in my life I could literally not live without it. I won't be finding a new job in the near future anyways. In fact I probably never will be successful at this point. Fuck Republicans.

This was the year I got into country, and otherwise didn’t pay attention to much else. Honestly I love the country. Some of it is cheesy now, but it’s in a way that’s unpolished so it has some charm to it. It still had some country twang, but it was actually quite strongly rock and pop leaning. Like a substitute for the floundering rock market, in a way. But it’s worth noting why I could so deep into country anyway: I didn’t like any other music.

Nah, the best year for music in the late 2000s for me is 2007 I agree, I would even go as far as saying that 2007 is my favourite '00s year for music. I'd take 2009 over 2020, economy and all. Things are pretty bleak in the world right now, but if the coronavirus has shown us anything, it's that you never know what's around the corner. Life will get better.

This is like a once-a-century disaster. Imagine Katrina in every city of the USA and the globe all at once. That's what we're seeing right now. And we have a madman at the helm through it. This was my worst fear when Trump was elected. The absolute worst thing that could have happened to this country has. With more competent leadership we could have been more prepared for it and it would be less of a disruption.

Honestly from what I remember hearing from back then, marathoning through the hit songs retrospectively and from the albums I've heard from this year, I think 2009 is a pretty mediocre to bad year for music. Sure it was a transitional year for pop music, but I honestly think the newer instrumentation and technologies incorporated in songs felt tacked on if not plain ugly, and not yet used in interesting ways as it would later on. Not to mention when it comes to major releases it gets blown out of the water by how extremely innovative and revolutionary 2010 happened to be.
I would even say that 2009 is one of the worst years of the 21st century so far.
