mobilesyrup.com/2020/03/16/universal-theatrical-movies-digital-release-coronavirus/Universal has confirmed that it will release several of its current and upcoming theatrical films on digital platforms early. This decision was made in response to the growing number of theatre closures and general practice of “social distancing” over concerns surround the coronavirus pandemic. Starting Friday, March 20th, Universal will put the following movies on digital platforms in the U.S., Canada and other markets: Emma (released February 14th, 2020 in theatres) The Invisible Man (released February 28th, 2020 in theatres) The Hunt (released March 13th, 2020 in theatres) Further, animated film Trolls: World Tour will have a simultaneous release on April 10th (April 17th in Canada) on video on demand (VOD) and in whichever theatres remain open. Universal says each movie will be available for $19.99 USD (about $27.94 CAD) to rent for 48 hours. A purchasing option was not mentioned. You don’t consent to other forums stealing this content? Didn’t you steal it yourself?
Anyway, I think this was inevitable, even without the coronavirus. Just the same old sequels, prequels, reboots and remakes are not enough to bring people back. The old act is getting stale.

I haven’t been to a movie theater since 2009. And I don’t feel like I missed out on anything.

There could be a boost to the cinema industry after the virus is over since people will want to get out of their homes. Hopefully the big theater owners like AMC, Regal, etc make it through this.

I hope AMC does not go out of business as it has the best presentation and big time feel of going to a movie, my only gripe is it needs to be more clean

Well, this is certainly a huge blow to the cinema industry. Maybe it could be recovered after the pandemic subsides or we could be seeing some sort of a digital movie revolution after this and the industry collapses.

Well, this is certainly a huge blow to the cinema industry. Maybe it could be recovered after the pandemic subsides or we could be seeing some sort of a digital movie revolution after this and the industry collapses. I'd be surprised if the film industry was to recover to the state it was in prior to the pandemic. The days of a blockbuster film grossing a worldwide income of over a $1 Billion are probably over. Streaming was always on the trajectory of eventually replacing cinemas as the dominant medium for new film releases, but I think the advent of the coronavirus pandemic is going to hasten the transition. I can see major film studios such as Disney and Warner Bros. choosing to release their films onto their streaming platforms first ahead of releasing them to cinemas. People will be glad to get out of the house once this pandemic is over, but I also think many will be cautious about going to places where they are in close proximity to hundreds of others. It's going to take several years for society to recover from this.

I don't think cinemas are going anywhere. They just make way too much money for everyone involved while streaming does not. A lot of people also like going to the theatre.

I agree that cinemas will still be around, however I have my doubts that they will be as profitable as they were prior to this pandemic. The coronavirus is going to change the way many people choose to think and act. Streaming will benefit from the quarantine and self-isolation laws currently in force. The longer this goes on, the greater the chance people's habits will start to change. Streaming your favourite new release could sound more enticing than going to a cinema where you're potentially in close proximity to hundreds of unhygienic people.
