This has been a controversial topic here in Australia. Many countries around the world (such as the US and the UK) have taken the drastic action of closing all schools in an attempt to curb the rate of confirmed cases. While it is still too early to determine how effective this strategy is, it's worth noting that China has reportedly had no new localised cases for three consecutive days after going into full lockdown for an extended time. This included shutting down schools.
However, our Prime Minister has repeatedly stated that the advice he has been given from medical experts is that schools should remain open during this pandemic. Kids and teenagers are at a very low risk of contracting the virus and closing all schools would potentially result in nurses and doctors not being able to attend work due to having to look after their kids. Despite this, people on social media have been calling for schools to be shut down immediately, especially now in the wake of the number of confirmed cases exceeding 1,100 here in Australia.
There's a few of us here who have already had to enter self-quarantine and stop going to work/school. Do you consider closing schools to be an effective way of stopping the spread of the virus? Do you think it's a good idea or do you believe they should remain open?

I feel as though it is now necessary at this stage. As I mentioned in another thread, my school has recommended for students to stay at home if they can. This began on Friday. The main reason given is that it will ensure that social distance is adhered to. Premier Dan Andrews has announced that Victoria will close it's schools from Tuesday, but I'm not sure whether that's happening now.
By the way, that press conference from Morrison was horrendous.

My old school announced a few hours ago they will be closing from Tuesday (like the state government has announced), but Scomo's press conference seemed to put more confusion to the debacle. I don't think the premier of Victoria has formally announced anything about it yet (I think?), so there's still chaos amongst the community. Whilst I had my doubts last week about schools closing, it's now appropriate that they have started to close. Hasn't Scomo realised the situation is getting worse? I wonder if his kids have really been attending school in the past few weeks...

It just dumbfounds me as to how Australia seems to be one of the few countries in the world which refuses to recognise the dangers of keeping schools open. I really think this says a lot about us as people and how incompetent our government is. This is a time where we should be working together as often as possible, yet the opposite is happening. Why the NSW Government has advised parents to keep kids at home while schools remain open is baffling. How is that going to help the situation we all find ourselves in?
