I'm not sure if others felt the same way, but I remember 2008 had somewhat of a "futuristic" vibe to it. I was 9 years old in 2008, so I was well aware of what pop culture and society were like at the time. Here are a few reasons as to why I believe 2008 had a "futuristic" feel to it; MusicMusic was quite clearly changing in Mid-Late 2008. It was also the year that electropop began to emerge in the Top-40 charts, which helped distinguish 2008 from previous years. I think electropop was the key behind music at the time having somewhat of a "futuristic" feel to it. Barack Obama's Election VictoryThere was a lot of optimism surrounding Barack Obama's election victory in November 2008. The fact that the United States were electing their first African-American President was viewed as a real sign of progress and it felt as though anything could be achieved. There was also an overwhelming support for him here in Australia and worldwide. I remember all of the media outlets were wanting him to be elected as well. Kevin Rudd's Stolen Generation ApologyFrom an Australian perspective, Kevin Rudd's Stolen Generation apology was a very historical moment in Australian history. The Stolen Generation is a term used to describe Indigenous Australians who were forcibly removed from their homes and families by the state governments and assimilated into "white" Australian society. They were either placed into missionaries or were adopted by "white" Australian families. The act was a nationwide policy and the policy was in act from the start of the 20th Century to the Early 1970s. The 2008 apology was a significant moment in Australian history, as it was the first time that the Government had acknowledged that their acts were wrong and they mistreated the Indigenous population. WALL-EAlthough the movie was aimed at kids, it also criticised societal themes such as consumerism, corporatism, nostalgia, obesity, waste management and humans impact on the environment. "WALL-E" had an overwhelmingly strong message of if we as a society don't take steps to reduce our impacts on the environment, it will destroy the planet and humanity as we know it. Introduction of Interactive Whiteboards in Schools2008 was also the year that the Federal Government began to introduce "interactive whiteboards" to Primary and High Schools. I was in Year 3 in 2008 and I remember that my class was promised that interactive whiteboards had the capacity to communicate real-time with someone living as far north as Cairns or Darwin.

I agree! if I had to pick a year to be a "modern" year, it would be 2006. Reasons Why:
Music: This was the year we started to see current, modern artists Like Rihanna and Justin Timberlake emerge.
I also believe this was a year in which the late 2000s culture first happened: The hairstyles, clothes and culture moved away from the late 90s/early 00s.
Cars: The Holden VE Commodore was launched this year. It was the first car which uses the current GM Zeta platform. The last car of this generation was made in May, 2013, just over 4 years ago.

I generally agree with you. However, in saying that, I also think that there are a fair few aspects of 2006 which are quite distinguishable from today. Music: Yeah, 2006 was around the time that Rhianna emerged onto the scene. If i'm not mistaken, Beyonce had also become a relatively big pop star by that point, so there definitely is a fairly strong connection with the music of today. Although, the types of genres which are popular are quite different. Emo and pop punk were pretty popular back in 2006, especially with the likes of Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco. Rock music doesn't really have a presence on the charts anymore (unfortunately), but it was still a dominant genre of music in 2006. Pop music was quite different as well. Justin Timberlake actually emerged as a solo artist back in 2002/2003. I'm not sure if you're familiar with the song or not, but one of his first solo releases was "Cry me a river", which was a pretty big hit at the time. * Video tapes were still very popular back then. I can remember going to my local Civic store at the time and all of the kids movies were still on VHS. Even though they remained popular until around 2009/2010, I don't think video tapes really have a lot in common with today, especially with the rise of streaming and PVRs. *I think the general vibe of 2006 is pretty different to today. To be honest, I would probably be more inclined to view 2007 as being the first modern year, as it was the year the first iPhone was released and Kevin Rudd was also elected as PM that year as well. Although, 2006 does have a fair amount of things in common with 2017 as well, so I can definitely see why you would think of it as being the first modern year.

Agree with you! 2007 was the first modern year like you said with the launch of the iPhone, but 2006 also has a few things in common with today, so maybe the 2006-2007 period.
Yeah, I probably should have done my research on a few things đł
On second thoughts, 2007 does sound like a more modern environment then 2006.

I know this is old but i honestly cannot think 2008 was futurustic. It's probably because it was the year you were born...

Maybe itâs because I was only five in 2007, but I have to disagree with 2007 being âmodernâ yes, the iPhone launched that year, but it couldnât even do half the stuff todayâs iPhones could. The first iPhone couldnât even take videos, there wasnât a front camera to take âselfiesâ you didnât even have an App Store yet, and it was slow when it came to browsing the Internet, you couldnât even send pictures when texting. Compare that to todayâs phones that can do not only all of that but even more. It wasnât even out for almost the first half of 2007 and even when it was released it was just barely out and still had a long way to go.

In retrospect, 2007 doesn't seem too modern, however it did feel modern at the time. YouTube had, for the most part, become a cultural phenomenon at the time and just the fact that you could watch videos on it made the site seem revolutionary. I even thought that MP3's were such a revolutionary thing at the time as well.

2008 may have had a futuristic vibe, but the more I think back I remember it being quite a dark time. Just the decline in pop culture, bad music and the reccesion with everyone losing jobs made it feel really dark and the future was definetly quite uncertain at this point, completely different atmosphere from the early 2000s and even the mid 2000s to some extent.
Imo, the early 2010s were a much better time, even though the economy wasn't that great, it was a much more optimistic time. Anyways, the only late 2000s year I really like was 2007, and while the music was very good even that year had a bit of a dark feel.

I agree that 2008 had a completely different atmosphere to previous eras of the 2000s. Although, I don't remember it being too dark of a time. Australia was one of the few countries in the world that was not truly impacted by the effects of the crisis. Petrol prices went up drastically and the economy was affected, but the effects weren't as severe as they were in the US, UK and New Zealand. I actually remember 2008 as having an optimistic vibe to it, even if the economy wasn't great at the time.

I remember starting kindergarten in late 2007 and it had a different vibe compared to starting first grade in late 2008. The 2008-2009 was definitely one of the most transitional school years Iâve lived so far.
