Yeah, I remember when they use to yell SEGA! At the end of the commercials. Sega had the most interesting commercials of the early and mid 90s

The early '90s were a great time for alternative-rock and if you were of a certain age, the breakthrough of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in Late 1991 must have truly felt like a groundbreaking event. My Dad (who was 24 at the time) can still recall to this day what exactly he was doing when he first heard SLTS and how he felt in that moment. The early '90s in general were a mixed bag for music, however I personally think the rock music from that time deserves the universal acclaim that it receives. Grunge isn't overrated. It revolutionised the state of pop culture at that time and it changed the trajectory of rock music going forward. The alt-rock scene would personally have to be my favourite element to pop culture from the era.
To be honest, I also think the early '90s were quite a decent era for movies as well. "Dances with Wolves", "Misery", "Jurassic Park" and "Schindler's List" are all great films, there's plenty of other movies which I've seen from that time that have been pretty good. I also grew up with movies such as "Aladdin", "Beauty & The Beast" and the "Land Before Time" films when I was little, so there is also that nostalgic element that I have for some of the films from back then too.
Are they an era I would personally want to check out if I had the choice? Probably not. However, I don't think the early '90s 'sucked'. The fashion, music and aesthetics from that time may seem ridiculously cheesy and outdated now, but there are elements of early '90s pop culture which I do enjoy and have an appreciation for.

Team Sega right from the day Sonic dropped, when Donkey Kong Country came out I jumped ship to SNES as did many others I'm curious to know what exactly was the appeal of the Genesis? I love the Sonic trilogy, but it seems to me like there weren't very many other interesting games on it.

I love the Sonic trilogy, but it seems to me like there weren't very many other interesting games on it. It's marketing was the same as playstation 1 was, it was seen as the cooler edgy console, it even looked more bad ass, half of why Sega dominated Nintendo from 91 - fall 94 was because of the constant Sega commercials on tv. This system was also called the "sport" console and had a huge sport fanatic base because the sports games that did appear on it played faster and better then SNES. Also Mortal Kombat when it dropped had blood on Sega and the Nintendo one didn't, Sega has this perception of being the cool console to have. It was targeted at the teen - adult demo while Super Nintendo was for children. Constant commercials on tv like this hammerd the idea into the GP's head When you would watch a tv show in the 90s like a sitcom they would always have a Sega more often than not. Sega had many amazing games that era, not just Sonic here are some of my favorites . Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Streets of Rage 2 (The greatest beat em up of all time) Vector man NHL 94 (not a sports fan but it was fun) Batman & robin, Earth Worm Jim, Earth Worm Jim 2, TMNT hyperstone, Power Rangers the Movie, Road Rash II, Mortal Kombat 1 2 and 3. Sega was destroying Nintendo for a good while until Donkey Kong Country dropped and they panicked with 32x add ons and really stupid decisions. If you were not alive then it is easy to see the pop culture revisionism that Nintendo likes too paint, but in reality it was furthest from that (even if SNES sales were close)

I'd still rather live in the early 90s than in 2020. I agree. I think the only time in the last century that can be compared to 2020 is 1929-33 or 1940-45. 2020 vs 1929-33 is pretty much a tossup. Only 1940-45 was a worse time to live through. Let's not pretend the 1900s, World War 1 or the Spanish flu pandemic were great times either.

My only reference point (at the time) was Sesame Street and Power Rangers and I liked those. But again, that was basically my only exposure to pop culture at the time, so I don't know.

You were telling us how wrong we were for disliking the early 90s and you ask a question like THIS? We still play Street Fighter whenever I go to my buddy's.

Let's not pretend the 1900s, World War 1 or the Spanish flu pandemic were great times either. I agree with the latter two, but what was wrong with the 1900s (decade)? The turn of the 20th century was an optimistic time, comparable to the Y2K era. The world was getting better and better in almost every respect, and like today, there was an unprecedented era of world peace (1871-1914). I wish I was around to experience the Paris 1900 World Expo. There was colonialism though so not all butterflies and roses.
