Since there’s nothing else to do in these boring times, I’ve been thinking to myself and wondering, what if the coronavirus pandemic happened in 2010? Would the 2010s have turned out a lot differently? Would people still look back fondly on that time period despite such a terrible crisis like how people still look back fondly on 2001 despite 9/11 and 2008 despite the recession? I know that the swine flu was still ongoing during the first half of 2010, but let’s say in this alternate timeline, that doesn't happen, just COVID-09. What are your thoughts?

It would prob looked at badly because the recession was already going on + a virus, 2010 would be a dark year, there would be some cognitive dissonance with the music being played and the state of affairs going on in the world. You would prob see electropop swept away with the quickness much like teen pop was on the radio in 2001 despite teen pop already starting to change and the Max Martin closing down his Cheiron studios in 2000.
There would be no where to escape if we were all locked at home in 2010 so most likely there would be a demand for more honest music. Or things would stand still like they are now and electropop would still be played on the radio.

That would have just boosted the apocalyptic feeling of that year. People might look back fondly on 2008/2009 now but it was absolutely dreadful to actually live through. I still think 2008/2009 is worse than 2020, actually, but this story isn't done being written yet.

Along with the recession, I think 2010 would be a disastrous year, and could potentially set off an economic depression since most people would be out of work and earning no money.
Video chatting was in its infancy, so I think there would be a boom of people using video chatting in long distances on their computers.
People will still use feature phones to text their friends and relatives.
Cable TV will experience extremely high ratings.
Remote learning will be a mixture of online classes and sheet problems (delivered by teachers themselves).
This is only a hypothetical scenario, though.

I didn't get affected by the recession so I just didn't really think it was a bad year. Though it was definitely the worst year of the 2000s

The economies had already collapsed by then, so this would have just been a worsening effect and prolonged the recovery even more. The pop culture of 2010 had fully transitioned as a response to the recession, so I don't think this would have changed much. But I believe that things like electropop would have lingered even longer due to the prolonged recession (not declining until 2015/6 instead of 2013).
Another response would have been to speed up advancements on certain technologies like video chatting and streaming since those were still very primitive in 2010.
If Covid-09 had exploded in December 2010, then the Arab Spring would have likely not happened. And that would have been an extreme game changer for the 2010s since things like Syria, ISIS and even the election of Trump due to fear mongering were direct results of that.
Alternative history is very interesting but also difficult since the effects of one changed event in the past get more and more pronounced with the years.
If "COVID-99" had happened in 2000, then the course of the 2000s would have probably been very different, but even more so the 2010s.

It would have been a depression if the banks weren't bailed out. As of right now, the financial system is sound. If businesses can borrow cheaply then the economy will rebound.

Had the economy not bottomed out in late 2008 the music would have been the same. Kesha actually had a cameo in the I kissed a girl video in 2008 while the album was finished. She had a cameo in it because it was suppose to come out sooner. She put the album on RCA records instead in 2009 (the majority of stuff from 2008 remained intact)

Had the economy not bottomed out in late 2008 the music would have been the same. The recession clearly sped up its popularity and standardization. To lighten the mood you want bouncy, mindless party music, not smooth R&B jams or gloomy emo music.

Well yeah it def helped people wanted an escape, but it Electropop was on the way in like I said the Fame was created in 2007, Kesha's album in 2008 (even had a cameo in I kissed a girl) but yeah the adoption rate would have been way slower.

At least during the recession you could easily live on and ignore the news for a while. You weren't forced to stay at home, and there wasn't all that overinformation due to social media and rampant paranoia. I would take reliving 2009 in a heartbeat.

Blockbuster was still around as well. When I think of summer 2009 I think of walking around for hours with friends. I have been softening up to 2009 as of recent. You know me I am the biggest hater of 2009 so that is kind of a big deal.

I was thinking more of the economics there. I lost my job In 2009 unlike in 2020 so I wouldn't be in such a rush to go back lol. And unlike today you wouldn't have access to such government largesse. Today also you have many places that are still hiring such as Amazon and grocery stores. Back then there was a huge jobs shortage outside of specialized fields. The Recession gave birth to the "Entry level job" that required 3+ years experience

You know me I am the biggest hater of 2009 so that is kind of a big deal. Yeah, 2009 was pretty weak (especially the first half). I enjoyed 2007 and the first half of 2008 but, late 2008/early 2009 was pretty bad, things did get a little better in the latter half of 2009 though and by 2010 it seemed everything was getting back on its feet pretty fast. Atleast you could still go outside and do a lot more stuff in late 2008/early 2009, so 2020 is probably still worse. Now, if there was COVID-09, I have a feeling 2010 would be seen the same way as we will see 2020 in the future. In 2010, the economy was in a state of recovery but, COVID-09 would of created a second recession in that year and the economy might not have fully recovered until about 2015 instead of 2013.
