Eh, not really. They were early '00s certainly, but not Y2K.
The vibe in those years was more edgy/mature and less poppy/innocent, both in regards to the music as well as the fashion of those years, and the 6th gaming generation was already in full swing, which included the GTA-craze.
Plus, the aftermath of 9/11 changed the socio-political landscape as well.
Yes, but 2002 and early 2003 were still like the 90s a little bit. 2000 and 2001 were exactly like the late 90s until 9/11 of course. Pretty much the early 2000s was an extension of the 90s. Mid 2003, it just became very 2000s. What do you mean by "like the 90s"? Be specific.

Yes, but 2002 and early 2003 were still like the 90s a little bit. 2000 and 2001 were exactly like the late 90s until 9/11 of course. Pretty much the early 2000s was an extension of the 90s. Mid 2003, it just became very 2000s. No they weren't, Teen pop was declared dead before 9/11 even hit, The economy in the usa was already in a recession before 9/11 hit March 2001. Pop punk 2.0 sub culture with acts like Sum 41 and Jimmy Eat world were already taking over the airwaves before 9/11. WWF entered the Invasion era and declined in popularity before 9/11 The Attitude era of WWF ended before 9/11 (ends when WWF buys WCW and Wrestlemania 17) Game boy advance debuts in Summer 2001 before 9/11, PS2 debuts in October 2000 before 9/11. Yugioh debuts before 9/11. Sega went belly up before 9/11. The only thing that could be described as late 90s/y2k looking is anything filmed in early 2001 that is getting a forced release, of course if you take a pictur in early 2001 and post it in Late 2001 its going to look dated. Its not indicative of where the culture is at the moment. And the songs that did have any of that teen poppyness like Jessica Simpson's irresistible flopped hard in fall 2001. All the things that make up that era are fizzled out before 9/11

I'm glad you included 1997 in the Y2K era. It was still "core '90s" or whatever but so was 1998, but people don't hesitate to call the latter Y2K.
This was basically my early childhood right here, except in 1997 I was into kiddy things like Teletubbies and Aqua (and Macarena of course, but that was a 1996 carry over).

Meaning how life was during the core of the 90s decade. 1990 and 1991 would have been more like the 80s, just like 2010-2012 was very much like the 2000s. 2000-early 2003 (pretty much the entire early 2000s) was like the 90s, though I can say after 9/11, things really changed. 2020 is not at all like 2019 due to the fact the 20s started off with a deadly virus. I think 2019 is definitely a cutoff for a generation due to this.

2010-2012 were not like the 2000s. The only 00s year the early 2010s are related to is 2009 and to a certain extent, 2008. They were very different from the core 2000s. Same with the early 2000s, they were not like the core 90s. The early 2000s was very digitalized.

Thanks ! yeah the reason why I made this chart because I saw some really shocking statements about this era stuff like "it started in 99 and ended in 04" almost spit out my water when I read it. I made this chart to kind of put the final hammer and give it an authentic date, even if it leans more USA then Canada pop culture. In 97 I remember frosted tips started popping off, I also remember this commercial on TV in 97 , u may remember it, I call it the FIRST y2k commercial and the first GEN Y commercial

Me neither all the stuff that makes up the y2k era is dead in 2002 and 2003 I mean- there are still some Y2K remnants that lasted up until 2003 like Men In Black 2, Spy Kids 2, and most notably Cheetah Girls, but they werent very successful and would not even pass in the mainstream, so it's easier just to say Y2K was dead during that time regardless

To me, 1999 and 2000 are the true Y2K years. 1997-1998 had a lot of 90s influence and 2001 was already heading into 2000s culture.

I would say 1999 and 2000 have the most purest y2k feel but 97 and 98 are both y2k years just a little bit underdevloped. All the things that make up the y2k era are in full gear by late 1997 while you see core 90s things being washed away.

The bling aspect of culture was already on its way by 2001, watch music videos that were filmed closer 9/11 they already have the bling bling/juicy couture look. Tons of music video promotions got delayed because of 9/11, but even before that teen pop was moving in a more mature direction. If a movie is filmed in 2018 and does not get released until 2020 then you are seeing a movie in a 2018 atmosphere. Same thing goes for music videos. There were even music videos filmed in December 2000 production shooting that didn't see the light of day until 2002. Movies like American Pie 2 that were closer to 9/11 but filmed a little bit earlier display the direction fashion and culture was going in. It's like that episode of Family Guy when they were talking about Myspace yet the episode aired in late 2009 because it takes a long time to make a cartoon. By the time the episode was out we were all on Facebook. TLDR : y2k culture was on the way out by 2001
