Again bubbly coupled all the pure y2k 98 - 01 elements which was on a more pure, extreme and wide scale level so shoes, phones, laptops, rooms, Kmart bathroom sets, newly renovated cafes, mass ads, mass logos etc where it was the only thing it wasn’t there in 1997. Again the late 90s was not a simply barely a year and then it overlapps with the Y2K for 3 years. It’s commonly established that late 90s and Y2K are separate periods with differences and similarities that lasted for a few years each. Aqua is not y2k but quintessential late 90s. Aqua style was severely dated by 1998-2000 standards . All of pictures especially the interior and furniture and camera are classic pure late 90s. They have the warmth, playfulness and bulkiness and that sets them apart from pure Y2K stuff which tends to dryer and duller and much simpler and more uniform. Lool,I already said it all 2d died down after late 96 and early 97 (technically 1995-mid 1996 was the last full period) but 1997-1998 was the very last gasp before it completely vanished. I’m just repeating now. nah, that design is from 1997 all the designs I showed you are from 1997 not 1998. 1997 is the year. If it wasn't anywhere in 1997 then how come I walked into a NikeTown in 1997 with those shapes? How come the Cyber Cafe NYC had bubble silver shapes when u walked in? How come my old GYM had translucent y2k color ? How come my Fuji Cam had see tru y2k style? This was not the year 1998 this was 1997.
You are just taking photos I am posting that are clearly y2k style and saying nope its not y2k if its not made in 1998. I could be lying and posting photos from 1999 and you would still say nope not y2k.
The Late 90s is not a seprate period , The late 90s is Late 1996, 1997 1998 and 1999 <<<<< that is the late 90s y2k era happened inside of the period and extended a little more into 2001.
You keep cherry picking saying y2k is not a thing in 1997 when it clearly is y2k design. The late 90s are years we lived in and it just so happens a y2k era popped of inside of them 97 98 99 is the y2k era and late 90s years.
There was no last gasp of popularity of 16 bit in 1997, there were hardly any games, and no one was talking about them. The most notable last 16 bit games are Megaman X-3 and DKC 3.

Yes I can tell from a mile away when products made in 1999-2000 versus older ones for the most part.
I’ve already answered the same points multiple times. Refer to previous answers.
Remember the launch of all the systems for the entirety of the 90s. A significant amount of people were still playing snes/genesis and 2d dos games in 1996-1997. In 1997-1998 it was mostly gone but some of it was hanging as described. Nobody is arguing that 2d games were on the same level as 3d games in 1997-1998.

Here is my take on 1997:
I do get that this was the year where the Y2K aesthetics become popular. I still consider 1997 a cultural 90s year because a lot of the fashion, music, politics was still in a 90s mindset. A lot of songs from 1997 still had a 90s sound that already sounds dated by the year 2000. Spice Girls and Hanson were 90s groups and were flops by the year 2000. 1997 was also when mom jeans and flannels were still worn and acceptable.

I have already gave u evidence and u keep saying not y2k. What year is this from tell me

Nope. Like I was said I was checking out stores around the time all the systems of the decade launched. I was a gamer the entire decade. Now I’m repeating myself wayyyyy too much. This seems almost deliberate. Repeat: 1995-1996 was the last full 2-d year. 16 bit/2d was waning but not gone in late 96 early 1997 2-d was just hanging in 1997-1998 even though it was largely gone and dated. Regardless of when that image came out it doesn’t not seem y2k. Could be made in 1995-97/1998, regardless of when it was made.

Once again not true by 1997 2d was seen as washed up, Sony didn't even want Megaman X-4 on their system. Research it and you will find the answers. What year is that image from if you are able to tell ? Put your skills to the test since you said you are able to tell, is it 1996 is it 1997? Is it 1998? is it 1999? 2000?
Ill explain after why I am asking u this, it is for good reason during this debate.
I was a gamer the entire decade as well, I remember when Sonic 1 dropped , I remember when 32x came out and flopped, I was there for N64 drop as well.

I remember going to a store in October 1996 with friends and finding sampling the N64 finding way too expensive and barely any games. Obviously not everyone owned one and people were renting them as novelty. Nor a Ps1 or Saturn just because hot titles launched and it fits a timeline. PCs were big as was Snes and Genesis. From August 1996 to March 1997. But these consoles just starting to loose popularity but still there. Mid 1997-1998 is when shift occurred but like I said there was a very small and nearly dead but existing market for 16 bit and it was not the hottest thing for sure that did not exist after. No one is arguing that 2d was not hot at this period. It’s not about one year that it could be made. It doesn’t work like that lool. The image could be from the mid, late 90s it doesn’t distinctly look like late 98-01 aesthetic. Regardless of when it was made.

I was in 3rd grade when Nintendo 64 Dropped, I have picture of me playing Mario 64 at toys r us on launch day....think again. I don't know what neck of the woods u were from but everyone threw 16 bit in the bushes once 1997 came along, even Blockbuster was throwing it in the bushes. I think you should research Sony's anti 2d Policy google and you find some information about it. The reason why hardly any 2d games came out for n64 in 1996/1997 is because 2d was declared DOA. Sony did not want to have 2d games like Megaman 8 on its system. google it.
So just for the record I asked u about the photo and you said it is indeed not y2k. .............however my friend....

Sony did not want to have 2d games like Megaman 8 on its system. google it."Not true, the " very start" of 1997 (Jan-Feb/early Mar) and the September-December 1996 were almost the same, 16 bit was around and actually still popular but slowly fading/dying. You could say a few months after towards the end of spring of 1997 was when 2d was officially dated. Already knew about these policies. Thats misinformation, not everyone threw 16 bit in the bushes once 1997 came along. Most rental stores had snes games in late 1996/early 1997 and other carried them throughout early to mid 1998. Not sure which blockbuster you are referring to, at most that likely happened in mid 1997 in select places. Again this isn't even an argument, Its like you repeating and going around the same topic. "So just for the record I asked u about the photo and you said it is indeed not y2k..............however my friend....The image was posted by the Official Y2K Aesthetic Institute ( a account that posts only y2k images) 1997........."It's just a tumblr blog though...It isn't an authority just some people or person who collects images online and labels them. The majority of items seem to be 1998-2001. These types of tumblrs are similar to the sea punk thing of the early 2010s, just tagging a wide scope of items (mid 2000s water fonts with sonic t-shirts) with a similar theme. Exactly I was right it does fit a mid to late 90s aesthetic, so 1997 was right. Definitely not reflecting the style from the 1998-00/01 period. I sent you a futuristic/Y2Kish image from 1994 earlier on. Doesn't mean 1994/5 or 1997 was the Y2K era, because 1997 was closer to it or has more examples closer to 98-00, and that there aren't differences between different years and eras. Also avant garde design and cyberpunk and rave graphics has been around for a while Here are early Y2kish things pulled from that tumblr. 1989 1992 1990 The actual Y2K era is 98-00 and what seperates it from the rest is the intensity, refinement and purity of the futuristic style among other non-futuristic factors and how common and central it was everywhere you went and how Y2K branched to include much more than just that in most aspects of pop culture. Examples 2000: 1999-2000 late 1998 1998 TVs were starting to look like this in stores, tv from late 1998: 1999 2000 1999 1999 1999 Hotels, malls, office, furnished apartments are renovating or styling their spaces closer to this look. Not just a few places with spacey themes. transparent objects were starting to get big later in the late 90s but they weren't as common nor paired with metallic/neo style and a wider color palette in the Y2k era. Dreamcast poster Songs totally foreign to the world of 1997-1998 ( which is most Y2K music from 98-01) just a few samples. Yes many euro hits or artist that crossed over and were quite played in the US but essential to the Y2K sound but already the vast majority of Y2K songs (whether rap, popular nu-metal, bubblegum pop) already feel mostly distinct for 98-00ish. 1997 and early 1998 still have lots of core 90s aspects outside of this aesthetic. Also futuristic and Y2Kish elements were a tiny bit a less polished and or somehow still aesthetically a bit more connected the more experimental mid 90s phase of this style ( think of Bjork graphics, rave posters etc) 98-00 era simply didn't have this. This period did not have the core 90s culture or influences (90s holdovers aren't equal to this) and this style evolved and became central in this time which which is why it is unique to this period. Again the most I can say is there are a few overlaps in some cases and 1997-1998 was closest the period, meaning there was more and closer examples, but not there. if you want to deny that go ahead. Do what you want

@slash I am sorry but u lost this debate lol.
2d was DOA by 1997, Sony had an anti 2-D policy (everyone google it) 2d was seen as washed up by 97. Now you just google y2k and seeing what pops up and posting things from the mid 90s. The y2k style is firmly in place with bubble shapes and refined by 97 as the pictures I provided. See thru items were already being sold at the store in 97 I had see thru pink calculator for class. Does not matter how polished it is, 97 is when music, fashion and design all came together to form what we call an era. It's not even just that, other things like WWF attitude era starting in March 1997, Daria and King of the Hill and South Park replacing Beavis and Butthead, TRL debuting in Fall 97 all these little things are little facets of the y2k era that had a big impact when they debuted in 97. As far as y2k design goes these were not minor isolated incidents y2k design was coming together with the fashion and with the music as one.
1997- 2001 is the y2k timeline. That twiter is sourced on Time Magazine and Rolling Stone
Straight from y2k twitter themselves 1997, can't out talk yourself from that one

Straight from y2k twitter themselves 1997, can't out talk yourself from that oneThose aren’t essential or strong benchmarks. Not going to bother looping and looping. you just keep repeating..yes I already know about the policy and wasn’t talking about ps1. it’s old now. beyond the first few months of 1997 2d was washed out /pretty much dead but still existed on small level that didn’t happen late 98 onwards with very odd exception . There weren’t enough n64 games when it first came out, a sizeable amount of people finishing off snes rpgs and games bought in late 96/early 97 in early 97. Dos Pc had 2d games popular in late 96/early 97.Saturn also had a good number of 2d games. Also not everyone played the latest stuff from the last 2-3 months only lol. Not all PS1 games from 1995/96 weren’t automatically dated. End of discussion. sourced on cnn and time ?? Loool okkkay. In either case: They still are a tumblr site that operate similar to other tumblr sites that overlabel and tag anything related to a made up or pre existing genre or name ; sea punk, slime punk, pastel goth, whatever wave music etc sometines lumping and wrongly labeling avant grade, cyberpunk and futurist and pre Y2K/Y2kish graphics as Y2K era. A lot of good examples collected for sure, labeling isn’t entirely correct. Done.
