I knew that the pop culture of 2010-2012 was noticeably different from what it had been just a few years earlier, but by the time we got to 2013 especially (when #hashtags and selfies became a thing), that's when I knew for sure that we had well and truly entered into the 2010s.

08/09 when the hipster stuff started moving in, liberal ideologies (ie: being “eco” minded) were cool/mainstream, etc. Without the earlier 00’s consciously seeming dated, it was just generally time for something fresh.

Yeah, as cultural events go, I would say the release of the movies WALL-E and Speed Racer stick in my mind as the turning point. These were movies that reflected upon and ridiculed the neocon culture we had been living in for the previous 8 years, so to me it marks the first time since like, American Idiot, that liberalism and populism were popular mainstream ideas. You know, hope and change and all that.

2009. I feel like that year was pretty much early 2010's in everything but name alone. It was culturally identical to 2010 (with the exception of the Obama inauguration).
I feel like 2008 was a very split year. Early 2008 still had a lot of core 2000's leftovers since it's so close to 2007. I'd say we started to transition into early 2010's culture during the second half of 2008.

2009. I feel like that year was pretty much early 2010's in everything but name alone. It was culturally identical to 2010 (with the exception of the Obama inauguration). In what way? In 2009, emo was still relevant despite declining in chart presence, and the soundtracks to most Nickelodeon and Disney Channel shows/movies were pop-rock songs. Most people still recorded shows off TV onto VHS because few people had a DVD recorder and PVR set-top box devices like Tivo were too expensive, they were around $200. I remember because I wanted one for my bedroom. App culture wasn't a thing yet. GPS devices and portable DVD players were still popular as smartphones had not yet become widely adopted. The second-half of 2009 (particularly from about September/October onwards) was much more like 2010 as that's when the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling" became a smash hit and electropop in general had truly taken over the charts. Other than that, 2009 overall was nothing like the early 2010s, especially the first-half of 2009 in particular. That was still very much a '00s period of time. IMO, people seem to overstate the 2010s influences and trends that were present in Late 2008-Early 2009. These were some of the biggest songs around the turn of 2009. There's no way they could have been released any later than 2010: {Spoiler}

One major difference between 2009 and 2010 is that traditional rock music was still a thing in 2009's charts, but suddenly vanished once we switch to 2010. It's something that I noticed on my own while exploring popular music, and this video confirms my sentiment:

Both 2009 and 2010 are similar due to electropop being on the charts but 2009 did have plenty of real rock songs in 2009 such as Use Somebody, Second Chance, Gives You Hell, Waking Up In Vegas, My Life Would Suck. In 2010, the biggest rock songs were Hey Soul Sister, Breakeven and Animal but they are blended with other genres.

I have flipped and flopped a lot on this topic over the years, one min I am pro 2008 next pro 2009. 2009 was more of an epilogue type feeling. Emo was still there in 2009 but it was heavily watered down and on the way out, Scene already was being phased out, Hipster was already here (depending on geo location). There were a lot of changes in 2008 that helped transform 2009 into a different vibe. Like for instance lets zap into lets say July 2009 for a moment. Lady Gaga by then was a house hold name Electropop was making a pretty good foot print for itself Kb toys and Circuity City had just closed up show Facebook was about to edge out Myspace Hipster was seeing good penetration in California, New Jersey, New York MTV had canceled TRL replacing it with On with Alexa Chung (not that it mattered TRL was dead in many peoples eyes as soon as 2007 hit) Cartoon Network had canceled Toonami Fashion was getting more colorful The Recession was in full effect (Mostly USA based) Obama was the President not George W Bush Its just one of those things that where you live is how fast the change speeds up. In New York Id say Hipster fashion was at a 66% rate while somewhere like Oklahoma where I visited in August 2009 had a 2% rate. In 2008 the 2000s already felt they were on a stimulus package in terms of culture.

Is it weird to say 2014? The fashion was very hipster, politics was very different, a lot of outdated slang (bae, turnt, on fleek, etc.), early 2010s culture still strong. I don’t know if outdated means the first year that you can really tell is different from the present? That’s how I’m taking it to mean.

I thought it said the first year to feel outdated for some reason.

Umm what? 2007 was like peak 2000’s lol Hahaha I felt like it was a watered down 2006. 2007 was a dark and digital version of 2006
