Saks Fifth Avenue files for Bankruptcy

Well damn. The malls are just going to be toast when this is all over.

Brick and mortar is dead and won't come back after coronavirus.  We'll have Walmart, Costco, drug stores, grocery stores, etc, but most specialty shopping beyond that will be done online exclusively.

The world Internet junkies have been pushing for since the 90s is just about here; a world without brick-and-mortar and where almost all shopping is done online.

I don't think any brick-and-mortar that sells products that can be bought online will survive coronavirus.  Since I shop at department stores I've never had to buy clothes online, but I imagine you can order straight from the designers in a lot of cases.  If you can't yet it will go there or Amazon will start becoming more popular for buying clothes.

Home Depot will survive.  Saks will not nor will any of the other department stores except for maybe Dillard's (though they could go down if real estate tanks hard enough).

I'm not familiar with these shopping centres as the Saks Fifth Avenue brand isn't in Australia, but i'd be surprised if the major chains went under. I actually think retail will bounce back strongly once the current lockdowns are eased. Sure, some small businesses won't be able to survive, but people are that desperate to get out of the house. Everyone wants to see a return of some sort of normality and people make a day out of browsing the shopping centres. They're not going to go away.
