We're likely looking at 2-3 years of rolling coronavirus lockdowns followed by 10-15 years of economic ruin. This is going to be a lost decade for most people economically. A "new normal" won't exist until the 2030s. That's bound to have social consequences, especially as the years drag on the misery gets deeper and deeper.
The most incompetent administration in U.S. history is in charge, bears some of the responsibility for how bad things are, and half the country is fine with that because "gays are icky."
I just don't see a lot of hope for the next decade. We've never been this collectively f*cked as a society.

What do you think 2035-2040 will be like?
I don't see much, honestly.

I’ve just about lost all hope. The 2010s is the last decade that people will miss.

@bchris02 , your pessimism is so hard for me to watch. I really wish you could at least finally be in a more positive environment than the one you're in. You are right that Red America is a completely different universe than Blue America these days. However, half of the country does not think "gays are icky", it's just that a huge number of people who support Trump are woefully nearsighted and decide to back him because they think he's straightforward, not realizing or at least grasping the depth of his heinous crimes against humanity. Well over 50% of Americans support same-sex marriage, with a vast majority at least supporting basic acceptance of gays.
As for how things are now, well, 2020 is certainly the darkest year we've had in awhile, but there is still hope that Biden will defeat Trump in November, as he has consistently led the polls. It's just a matter of anti-Trump voters actually getting out to the polls, or at least committing to the polls should we still be as quarantined by then as we are now.

The hope is that those voters won't flock to Justin Amash and Jesse Ventura instead as their "protest vote." What a waste of a vote.

I wish things could get better as well but at this point I'm pretty sure that ship has sailed. I should have left my small town in 2015, when I was 30. That would have given me five great years of live before all of this. In regards to politics, the Christian Right has won. They've destroyed America in retaliation for our legalization of same-sex marriage. They've destroyed the hopes and dreams of millions and have ruined the economy for a generation. They cheer it on because they'd rather destroy the country and inflict unimaginable suffering on everyone than just be tolerant of people who are different from them. Public opinion really doesn't matter because the only people who have power in this country right now are the extreme fundamentalist Christian homophobic, racist, xenophobic bigots. Thanks to this economy, my career prospects are OVER. Done. Do I go into debt to go back to school only to crash and burn again like I did last time? Everything that was fun or enjoyable in life is gone. "Darkest year in a while" is an understatement regarding 2020. It's like we are living in a dystopian horror movie nightmare. It's just hard to have any hope at all at this point.

Uhh bchris, sorry to say this but the fact that you said Christians are ruining America made me feel personally attacked... I am a Christian myself, but I don't support Trump, and I believe gay marriage is ok as people have the freedom to be who they want to be. Nobody is perfect, we all sin, just so you know. Please don't hate on me

They do not care about the selflessness Jesus preached and instead look for obscure, antiquated verses to make themselves feel better for dong terrible things to others. There's a major difference between real Christians and extreme fundamentalists.

It's just hard to have any hope at all at this point. I assure you that you wouldn't be this terrifyingly negative if you were not living in your podunk nowhere redneck environment. Things certainly wouldn't be perfect in a liberal city, but you'd find that the major local institutions are very accepting and protective of minorities and that discrimination is treated very, very seriously. Here in California, for example, state laws are very explicit about preventing discrimination and companies have serious rules that ensure fairness. While socioeconomic inequality is far from resolved, you'd be in much more welcoming company that wherever you are right now. Once this quarantine is over, you seriously need to get the hell out and start anew somewhere more accepting. It's clearly worth it at this point.

Yeah, I have to agree. @bchris02 is referring to the Prosperity Gospel, anyone different than me is going to hell, "fuck you, got mine" variety of Christians. Whether they're the "real" Christians or not, well, that depends on more enlightened, tolerance-minded Christians to decide. Are they going to let these folks be the loudest voices for their religion or will they try to live the philosophy of love and understanding that Jesus preached?

I'm always careful to specify "Christian right" or "fundamentalist Christian" because not all Christians are those type. It's just in the Trump era, those type are exceptionally powerful and it's those types that are a majority of people who are still Trump supporters in 2020. And with coronavirus and what has happened to the economy, it's going to take society a long, long time to recover from the Trump years. The Christian Right takes much of the blame because they sacrificed their principles and elected an incompetent treasonous madman out of spite.

I'm really not sure. COVID-19 is an apocalyptic event and has ruined everything. My optimal time to move was back in 2015 and not doing it has become one of my biggest regrets. Nowadays I really don't even see a point anymore. The next 10-15 years are going to be brutal no matter what. Life as we all knew it is over.

The economy will start moving in the right direction again once people go out and do the things they've sorely missed during the quarantine. Once the time comes, you really need to get out of redneckville and find your people again. Anything to escape the hell that makes you think this pessimistically. You should be in the company of those who will support and help you through difficult times, not those who make you feel like nothing will ever get better.

Yes, but we don't know how long-lasting the economic damage will be. It could be 5-10 years before we get to a true recovery again, it's too soon to say.
