Was listening to older eminem cds the other day and a bunch of related stuff and felt like bringing up this topic. Aside of some of the controversial subjects in his earlier works, do you think his first few albums are overrated or it is the opposite for you ?
He was considered among some of the best and most innovative rappers and is a sort of definitive Y2k/2000s artist. While there is a lot of creativity and very clever and witty lyricism in his first album and some of that in his next few I find a lot of it just hasn't aged well mainly due to the whiny or shallow tracks or parts of the songs (sorry whoever is fan!) whereas older hip hop music that might a bit cheesy, typical or silly to me tends to be more listenable for some reason
Also a lot of songs got overplayed on the radio back in 2000-2002 way too much, which kind of takes away from it for me possibly.
II remember how he got praised as being somehow more skilled or better than the style of hip hop from earlier years but t don't understand why and how he was perceived this way.
What do you guys think? Do you think the opposite?

Its because Eminem IS a white rapper, to put it simply. He's a great artist, but he IS potentially overrated. I agree, his early works are a bit cheesy, but he picked up on how to formulate classics immediately by the releases of Without Me, Loose Yourself, Toy Soldiers, D12 Era.
Eminem is at his best - 2002-2004.
