The 2010s smartphone era started around the end of spring 2013 when both smartphones and tablets surpassed PCs in sales, and ended around the fall of 2019 right before COVID-19 started. There are 3 waves within this era:
Wave 1 Transition from Electropop era: Spring 2013 - Spring 2015: Vine, Tumblr, Selfie, Hunger Games, Lorde, PS4 vs Xbox One, GTA 5, Rise of Instagram and EDM.
Wave 2 Peak of 2010s Smartphone Era: Summer 2015 - Fall 2017: 2016 Election, Dabbing, Youtube Drama, Cavs-Warriors, Pokemon Go, Fidget Spinners, Rise of Memes, Snapchat, and Mumble Rap.
Wave 3 Start of Gen Z Culture: Winter 2018 - Fall 2019: Tide Pods, Fortnite, Juuling, AirPods, Billie Eilish, VSCO, Avengers Infinity War, Rise of TikTok and Bedroom Pop.

Late 2019-2021 will probably be remembered as the coronavirus era.

I don't get why covid-19 would have ended the "smartphone era". If anything smartphones are more ubiquitous than ever as a way of communication and socialisation due to social distancing.

The statistics don't show it, but I would argue that the smartphone era began in earnest in 2011. By the time I started high school in early 2012, most teens had one, even if they were still a huge novelty at that stage.

Late 2019-2021 will probably be remembered as the coronavirus era. March 2020 - TBD, because it was in March 2020 when the quarantine orders came in place.
No one cared about the virus in late 2019 and Jan-Feb 2020. I even went to two hockey games in January 2020, where nobody was social distancing, and it was completely normal.

You can't really say that if you take a world view. As early as January, social distancing and stay at home advice were the norm in some countries.

The advice across China in January was to stay at home and minimize the risk of infecting or getting infected. It wasn't just applying to near Wuhan/Hubei province.

Smartphone penetration hit 50% in the United States in late 2013, so makes sense to start the era then. People still use smartphones today. Like, when I drive by the park, I see people on the grass with their smartphones. I think 2020 is the start of the video conferencing era.
