I was going through yearbooks and videos the older day and I remembered how some, not all obviously, 10 to 14 year olds at the time especially during the early to mid 90s (1991-1996) sometimes dressed and tried act older than their age compared to other periods, in a way they were trying to emulate the older teen style at the time. I remember this since I was there and felt it and I was just looking back and noticed it.You can also say this to a certain extent about teens and 20 somethings. The only other period that sticks out is the 1950s and before where children were expected to act or dress older or even earlier when tougher times or other situations lead to this but that's more extreme and a different topic. I noticed grunge and hip hop hair and clothes and attitude sort of aged the tween vibe of that era in a way, obviously to some extent, not everyone.Does anyone remember this or know what I'm talking about? Kriss Kross, identical to 5th and 6th graders at the time with a similar look who pass for 15 , I think kriss kross and similar kid rapper groups from that were around the same age or bit older, but give off that hardened or older look. Edward Furlong in T2 was set to play an 11 year old, he probably was 13, but could pass as an 11 year old in way, but I remember a lot of 11 year old who could pass for 15 or 16 with this exact look. Alex Mack She was probably 12 in this season, and was set to play someone that age. Aayliah: She's probably around 14 or 15 in this video when she started her career she can pass for a 17-20 year old, a lot of it the clothing and vibe imo: Hanson singer and other member were under 14/15 or under when MMMop was released Silverchair probably 15 or so when released

Kids and teens have always tried to appear older, or "cooler", than their age. I can remember desperately wanting to be an adult when I was a kid and back when I was 8 years old, I quite often used to wear my cap backwards because I thought it was the 'cool' thing to do. Maybe the mainstream emergence of alt-rock and gangsta-rap in the early '90s changed the perception somewhat in comparison to previous eras, but the mindset has always been around. I think the kids/teens in the pictures/videos you shared generally look their age.

Maybe the mainstream emergence of alt-rock and gangsta-rap in the early '90s changed the perception somewhat in comparison to previous eras, but the mindset has always been around. I think the kids/teens in the pictures/videos you shared generally look their age. I would say they would look a bit younger without the more oversized, older teen clothing, and or long parted swoshy hair. Some stick out more. Edward furlong looks a lot older to me, a lot of 12 year olds who had that haircut in 1993 could pass for 16. Aaliyah is 14/15, can pass for 23. Even the guy from silverchair can pass for a 17-20 year old. When 11 year old kids looked 100% identical to Kriss Kross, they looked older for sure. The culture at the time was bombarding us with dark gen x culture designed for an older audience, it was so massive and so different to other periods and it seemed like tweens and preteens were influenced by that not only by clothing but attitude wise and it was almost like it was competing with other stuff designed for more for our age group. I get what you are saying that this isn’t entirely exclusive to the 90s or to one age group and can be a common thing but there was definitely a bit more of it then, and among 10/11 to 14/15 year olds. Also applies to teens and young adults and related at that era and earlier. There was a sense of people acting or attempting to carry themselves as if they are older and sometimes in this more formal way. Also with fashion to some extent. Ex look Movies depict this to some extent but sometimes they hired older actors. But a lot of times they didn’t. Heathers for example they are all around the same age 17-18. They look their age but give off an older vibe for the clothing etc 2.bp.blogspot.com/-OrdjBWUMMTc/UZvllvFhyuI/AAAAAAAAArs/2uuoHo8rcjo/s1600/Heathers+1+edit.pngI look at teen movies from the late 2000s I don’t get the same impression. These people are around the same age as the people in heathers but look a lot younger to me they could all pass for 15ish imo. I think it’s the dress, hair and vibe. c8.alamy.com/comp/P65722/high-school-musical-backstage-at-the-billboard-music-awards-at-the-mgm-grand-in-las-vegas-december-04-2006-eye-contact-full-lenght-highschoolmusical095jpghighschoolmusical095-event-in-hollywood-life-california-red-carpet-event-usa-film-industry-celebrities-photography-bestof-arts-culture-and-entertainment-topix-celebrities-fashion-best-of-hollywood-life-event-in-hollywood-life-california-red-carpet-and-backstage-arts-culture-and-entertainment-photography-inquiry-tsuni@gamma-usacom-music-celebrities-musician-music-group-2000-to-2009-P65722.jpg Infact I see a lot of in more recent movies and clips.

Tbh I gotta agree with sharksfan. I will say that certain eras have an overall edgier look than others, which of course will trickle down to the younger kids. It all comes down to perspective though. When I was kid, this particular style was fading out, but I was fairly used to seeing it on reruns of kids shows. Ie: Mary-Kate and Ashley would've worn some of those Alex Mack type grungy outfits, which compared to their y2k era outfits, would've actually seemed comparatively juvenile. Since I wasn't familiar with the grunge movement until I was maybe 10, nothing would've struck me as mature or even adolescent. It was just how kids looked on 90's Nick. Meanwhile in the 00's, you had young kids in brands like Ecko and Phat Farm, tight Abercrombie shirts, sagging was popular, etc. That struck me as looking a lot older, since I can actually remember it trickling down, and when kids sizes started becoming available. I even found emo looks to make tweens appear older, especially due to the connotation of hair dye and piercings being for the elder teen crowd. So put into context, I can see the point about some kids in the 90's. I just don't think it's exclusive to that era.

So put into context, I can see the point about some kids in the 90's. I just don't think it's exclusive to that era. Yeah each of us has our own take. There is a possibility it could be generational. There isn’t a big difference and sometimes there really isn’t a difference but I still see one, to some extent, from my perspective. The kriss kross or the hardcore tween rapper look from 92 to 96 could sometimes look goofy or edgier (more like authentic 90s gang or full on rapper looks) + signature core 90s hair and clothes look that were dead by the 2000s to me definitely had a minor, at least, aging factor. Sometimes the result was to age or slightly mask the age like the other 90s styles which is probably just a coincidence due to some fashion combo, outside of that people just happen to look older for their age. Still alot those looks represented a popular look with 11-12 year olds (and a bit older) were dressed in throughout the mid 90s. Also sometimes this was coupled with a mature gen xennial or gen y kid attitude; the knowledgeable type, someone who attempted to talk like an older person or act older, attempting more often to do things that teens did etc. only what made it different was that went with image and was much more common and was reflective of more traditional influences, gen x slacker, or hip hop attitude of the time that were coming from an older generation which I think had more "mature" influence than the 2000s/2010s which has a softer and more cheery vibe. So yes attempting to emulate adults in some ways is shared across generations but this was a unique combination. Of course not everyone fit this as well. I don’t know to to better explain this. Being there you would get the sense of this more than a few videos. You can also search more Kriss Kross pics. Would scan yearbook photos but not comfortable. Having remembered both personally I can say the 90s styles still look a bit older. While older periods/ generations may have had a bit more or different expectations for different ages generally speaking, I just think the dark and nihilistic gen x teen and 20 something culture and attitude was very big and definitely played a role in influencing younger people at least to some extent. Baggy trousers, ecko, eminem wannabes, and hip hop were popular in the early 2000s to mid-late 2000s but I can’t say the look was of the same style and notable for aging tweens. Again tweens may have looked older in certain ways with the points you've mentioned and maybe to you, I can understand that, but as a whole I feel that entire period was notable for everyone looking younger or having a kidified look compared to other periods.. Even the mid 2010s fashion ( beards/facial hair, and hipster fashion) aged people a bit more than the 2000s era even thought its still very similar though. Again all kids/teen see stuff in certain way but i still still see it this way. The grungy outfits and preppy 90s style and the more formal or elaborate fashion and hairstyles of the 1980s seem to give off an older look in some ways, whether that is minor or a bit subjective might be the case but I still think it's real difference. When I see stuff from the early 2000s to mid 2000s onwards I see WAY too many 17-25 year olds in teen movies, the Disney channel, pop stars, and personalities who pass for 14-16 or just look way too young for their age whatever their age is. I think a lot of it boils down to style/fashion and sometimes demeanor or attitude, while in other cases it must just be a coincidence or subjective. Its not good or bad, just an observation. The mop emo hair and messy spiky hair and 2000s hair and fashion does make people younger imo. Many 2010s looks age the person a bit more but not that much Another example is mall goth or just 90s goth era when of 12-14 year olds were literally dressing like marilyn manson, and the crow to school in 1995 or 1996/7, to me that was more menacing and giving off an older vibe than emo, which tended to have a cartoonish and softer look that still blended with more pop friendly trends at that time. If you look at most movies, pop stars and teen movies From the 80s and 90s: clueless, dangerous minds, the craft, doom generation, heathers, breakfast club, even Y2K: she’s all that, 10 things I hate about you, Jawbreaker, American pie I think the teens and characters tend to give off a more mature look and attitude, generally speaking, compared to similar films of 2000s/2010s imo. Yes a large portions of actors are the age they play or very close. To some extent it is symbolic of the era.

I do feel like there are different ways to define "mature". There's trying to be more adult-like, and there's what we might associate as "slutty" (maybe "fratty" "thug" etc.) that's generally viewed as negative outside its circle. I could see the 90's featuring more of the former, whereas the 00's was big on the latter. For tweens and teens, it was all about being loud and flashy. I'm not sure Disney Channel is really the right place to look for what was actually considered stylish though, as they made a point to not style their stars in a way that parents could complain as risque. (MTV might be more accurate.) In fact, the oversexualization of increasingly younger kids was a pretty hot topic at the time. Here's an article I actually remember from 2007: Girls’ clothing more revealing
Kylie Jenner was basically the ultimate cool tween in the late 00's. Though of course the perspective continually changes. Now I see memes talking about how kids from that era looked young compared to the late 10's. (Personally I found the 2010's to be both more serious yet less mature.) spoiler

She just looks like the odd early bloomer. But I do see a more revealing trend but i dont personally think it's related to maturity, maybe in some cases. Outside of the Disney channel, the overwhemling amount of mid 2000s to mid 2010s pop stars, stars from TV programs, reality TV and just many who were 17 to 30 year olds gave off a significantly younger vibe. Again not a good or bad thing, and of course not everyone. Pop stars : Ex. Jonas bros, Ariande Grande, Bieber, Mile Cyrus. A lot of these new actors look a lot younger than their age imo: www.complex.com/pop-culture/the-best-actors-in-their-20s/Again a lot of this is fashion, style, demeanor. You also have cultural age expectations and genetics or foods/conditions that can prevent people from aging as much. prior to the 1990s people did actually look older at certain times more than other for sure. a lot of online people bring up this topic. Many people I've spoken with agree to some extent. I feel this lasted until 1999 or 2000. But even then 2000-2004 still had a bit of it left but it felt things were changing in 1999 where a lot of those core 90s looks and vibes just vanished. Still Y2K still had it to some extent the early 2000s. Especially for people born in 1978 to mid, maybe late 80s at most I think. slashpop American Pie series is my Favorite lol Yeah. The movie thirteen is also underrated. Evan's probably starred in better movies but it's not bad for an early 2000s movie.
