We had a topic here not long back which asked people what their least favourite year for pop culture was of the 2010s. 2019 ended up receiving the most votes in the poll. I'll be honest, I think there are definitely enough reasons for people to dislike every year of the 2010s when it comes to mainstream pop culture, but I do think it's interesting that 2019 received the most votes out of all of them. Speaking in regards to music in particular, I personally thought 2019 was a huge improvement over the years that proceeded it. It was arguably the most diverse the Top-40 charts had been in at least five years, as you had alt/industrial-pop becoming popular thanks to the success of Billie Eilish, Trap, country-pop (e.g "Shallow", "One Thing Right"), house ("Piece Of Your Heart") and even pop-rock (e.g "Sucker", "If I Can't Have You"). One of the biggest hits of the year was a traditional pop ballad ("Someone You Loved"). There's actually quite a number of songs that made it onto the charts last year that I like:
I'm not really a fan of Post Malone's music, but when I heard this for the first time, it made me realise that he is genuinely talented. This is a good song.
Which features a great guitar solo at the end from Tom Morello.
This isn't normally the type of music I would like, but it's catchy and it grew on me after hearing it on the radio quite a lot.
I like this. The song, and her voice especially, reminds me of Florence and the Machine.
I've never liked Halsey, however the chorus to this is pretty decent.
As well as those songs, 2019 was also a decent year for underground releases too:
If only Chester was still with us, this is such a great song.
I'm interested to hear other people's opinions on why they do or don't like music from last year.

Extremely boring and bland. Pretty much forgettable. “Old Town Road” was definitely a good song as well as “Money In The Grave”, “Panini”, and “Sucker For You”
2018 and 2020 (so far) are way better IMO.

That's interesting, because I actually have the exact opposite opinion. 2020 has been awful IMO. I think part of the reason too as to why I prefer 2019 over both of those years is the fact that mumble-rap seemed to have less of a presence on the charts last year, whereas it has pretty much dominated music this year and it did in 2018 as well.

Is this even a question???
That year was absolute garbage. There's not a lot of upbeat music that year because of the removal of EDM and positive messages in lyrics. The lack of high balance between major and minor notes make the songs sound darker and downbeat, as well as the missing variety in percussion and beats from previous years makes it boring and less dancy. This year is all filled with downbeat trap songs about depression or breakups and giving up, and its very annoying and boring. Its a huge shame considering how great music sounded in the mid 2010s as it was more diverse and happy, while 2019 was all pessimistic and boring.

It was a decent year. What I especially liked about 2019 especially is how surprising it could be. A Lady Gaga revival? A successful comeback for a late 00s boy band? A Halsey x K-pop group collaboration? Billie Eilish' brand of manic pop taking over the charts? A trap-cowboy song featuring a country novelty artist from the early 90s that will go on to break the internet (and the Billboard with 19 weeks number 1)? The great Lizzo being catapulted in the mainstream? Post Malone tapping foot into indie music? Mariah Carey's 19th number 1 on the Billboard?
All of this would have sounded pretty silly in just 2018 and I already miss this sense of surprise.
And 2019 sure is a hell of a lot better than 2020.

I wouldn't say it was a fantastic year for music, but it was still more memorable than the prior couple of years. There were some fun big songs that you could sing along to. Never thought I'd be saying this, but the Jonas Brothers comeback was kinda cute and unexpected.
Tbh I'd kill for an "Old Town Road" type summer hit right about now.

Tbh, I wasn't really surprised by the Jonas Brothers' comeback. I didn't expect "Sucker" to have become as huge as it was, but the two of them had kept within the public eye by a certain degree for a comeback to have been a realistic prospect. Joe Jonas himself even had a pretty big hit with his band DNCE back in 2016 with "Cake by the Ocean".

I used to make fun of their music in the late 00's, but I found their updated sound different.

Also, the fact that music in 2019, even 2020 is mostly depressing, just makes depressed people even more depressed and does not help. I even remember people hearing how good, happy music helped people get out of depression, but unfortunately that's not the case by today's standards...

Tbh I don't think it was a huge issue in 2019 since sad, slow music can actually also be beneficial to people in helping them relax, destress and focus on other things. It's less so excusable in 2020 where music plays a much bigger as an escapist outlet to forget about the world. Although party music like in 2010 doesn't really make sense for 2020 since partying is strongly contraindicated with our current situation.

To be honest, I hated the music. If you take a look at the Billboard top 100 that year, Hip Hop was far too saturated, to the point of being ridiculous. To add, all the Hip Hop that year all had the same 'trap' sound to them. Hey, I'm a fan of Hip Hop but, 2019 took it a bit too far. Also, if it wasn't Hip Hop, it was some super boring pop or house song. I really hope I don't sound like an old man but, 2019 really just lacked diversity.

I think it was a pretty good year for music, and also had diverse music subgenres; it's definitely better than the relatively lifeless music scene of 2018. I liked more songs such as "breathin", "Old Town Road", "Shallow", "when the party's over", "Good as Hell", "Truth Hurts", and "Circles" (my personal favorite pop song from that year).
