Today Katy Perry's iconic California Gurls music video is officially ten years old. This song was everywhere during the summer of 2010 and inspired countless parodies and versions for other locations on YouTube. It contributed to a fun and carefree atmosphere as the recession was winding down. This doesn't actually feel that old in terms of my personal memories, but style-wise it is so different from today's pop. While this song, but especially its video, made a strong assertion that bubblegum was back, it is again dormant a decade later. How do you guys feel revisiting "California Gurls" today?

That means I graduated high school 10 years ago I loved Katy Perry even before this song, but the entire Teenage Dream album is back-to-back full of bops. I think five number-one singles came out of it, which matched a record set by Michael Jackson! I wish she would go back to making double-entendre Walmart pop.

Exactly the kind of boost we could all use in our lives right about now. The whole album was lyffffe.

"California Gurls" has never been memorable for me for whatever reason, I always tend to mistake it for "Last Friday Night". I am reasonably familiar with it and I have heard "California Gurls" a countless number of times before of course, but I really have to think hard about how the song itself goes and what it sounds like.
Whatever the case, the way I feel about this song is the same that I feel about 2010 in general now being a decade ago. It only seems like yesterday to me that it was released, but on the other hand, I can kind of believe that it is now ten years old. "California Gurls" itself doesn't really leave much of an impression on me because I've never been a fan of Katy Perry's music or electropop in general if i'm being brutally honest. I deliberately went out of my way to avoid listening to the radio during those years. Also, my Mum used to repeatedly play "Teenage Dream" on her iPod in the car at the time and even though I generally consider it to be one of Katy's better songs, it did put me off from having any remote interest in her music.

Same here. I liked her other stuff from that era so it was just that song I didn't really care for. What I would give to relive 2010 though.

My main problem with "California Gurls" is that the 8-bit production isn't great and reminds me too much of Ke$ha's "Tik Tok", but that hook with the funky guitar is really undeniable and the music video is probably one of the best of the 2010s. It's super trashy but super fun.
Kind of makes me wish she could go back to this brand of sex-driven bubblegum pop music. Which is funny because back in 2013 I clamored that she should move on from that style. But seeing how her recent stuff like "Daisies" is so lifeless and devoid of personality I actually rather go back for her actually.

Not too say Katy couldn't do that style of music justice if she was ever inspired to go down that path again, but she's 35 years old and is about to be a mother; she isn't the same person as she was over a decade ago. Also, artists who continuously choose to rehash their earlier material begin to lose their credibility over time and are mocked for treading the same ground, which is exactly what happened to Nickelback as the years went on. I don't want a 2020 version of "California Gurls" or "Teenage Dream". I'd much rather see Katy Perry grow as an artist, not live in the shadow of her past glories.

“Teenage Dream” is probably my favorite song off the album. It rides that line of being neither serious nor ironic that hit so right at the time. Or at least, that’s how I interpreted it.
I think the general public would still be responsive to Katy and her camp pop if she could just come out with a true bop. Since this album she has had meh songs. Maybe go for the dreamy vibe that’s in right now?

Maybe go for the dreamy vibe that’s in right now? She kind of did already. It's just that practically no one noticed besides her fans. ^Hard to think this massive flop came out the same decade as her bubblegum glories.

I guess this and her even newer song “Daisies” are pretty on trend, I do like the visuals. But tbh I find both songs....boring? The magic of Katy’s older music is in how memorable and catchy it is.
