Okay, sorry for the sensationalist title, I don't really have insomnia–tossing and turning in bed as hours flow by–I tend to fall asleep pretty quickly, but like most people I tend to stay up way past schedule and don't get enough sleep, simply because I'm not sleepy when I need to be and there are more exciting things to be doing than sleeping.
But one thing I noticed is that audio books put me right to sleep no matter what time of day I'm listening. I listen to them while doing household chores (twice a day) and, tired after doing those chores, I lay in bed with no intention of falling asleep, but it often happens anyway.
So I tried experimenting with listening during my bedtime and by god, it worked! 5-15 minutes is really all I needed before I was sound asleep.
Yeah, I usually wake up an hour or so later to pause the recording and take my headphones off, but it takes no effort to fall back asleep. I might experiment with playing through my Google Home speakers and setting a sleep timer, but I feel like the headphones are an important part of it. It keeps your ears warm, and with a warm blanket and soft bed, I feel like I'm sinking into my bed as I drift away to sleep.
I think it's important to choose an audio book you don't care about or have read already, but it should be interesting enough that you stick to your bedtime and get excited about sleeping. I'm listening to The War That Ended Peace: The Road to 1914 by Margaret MacMillan. It's about the precursor to WW1 with its mass murder, bombs, cities laid to rubble and political and castle intrigue, but I intend on reading the physical book version of it rather than the audio book, so I don't worry about falling asleep halfway or missing some elements of it here and there. It's really a perfect bedtime story!

It's good that you've found something that works for you. I've never actually listened to an audio book before, but I have heard that they're meant to be a good way of helping you unwind for the night. I should give it a go myself as I quite often have the same issue.

Yeah, during the pre-pandemic days, I had trouble falling asleep right away until like midnight-2 am. It must be cause I always found sleep boring and I just wanted it to be the next day. However, nowadays, I cant sleep at night knowing about the stress I am enduring, and I end up having these weird dreams related to goals I had before the pandemic began which I could never follow through with due to the pandemic, and I do not even feel like waking up during the mornings know the challenges I am required to face. It is almost like I just want to be trapped in a dream state until all this blows over. I am really desperate for some miracle.
