When I went on a trip down to Melbourne back in April 2011, I didn't have a digital camera with me to take photos with, so instead, I actually filmed everywhere I went with my Flip Video HD Camcorder (a very Early 2010s product ). As a result, I ended up filming myself walking through the streets of Melbourne and riding on the trams, so these recordings provide a bit of an insight into how people went about their lives at the time and what the technology was like. It's not the greatest video out there of course, but there are a few interesting observations that can be made: * Even though this was filmed in April 2011, no one walking along the streets is staring down at a smartphone. * There's an ad for the Nokia E7 at 0:12. * A lesbian couple walks passed at 1:06. Looking back, I really feel bad for ever filming them at all, but again, its a reflection of the time. I've had this idea for a series of threads for quite some time. There's heaps of videos on my hard-drive similar to this which aren't being put to any use, so I may continue make more if people are interested.

These were different times, indeed, and I felt bad for the couple as well. The joke from the street performer was pretty stupid.
But other than that instance, it's interesting how many people haven't gotten phones yet and weren't as dependent on them as opposed to now.
Oh, and they weren't in a pandemic. Huge plus right there.

This video is weird and kind of cool because the quality of the video makes it seem more recent, yet you can tell it’s from a completely different time period. I think the part that really got me was the guy who made that joke about the couple. 2011 was definitely more politically incorrect compared to today. If he made that joke today, he’d definitely be cancelled and receive backlash.

Things were a lot different than I was expecting in the video. 2011 really is becoming dated.

I think the part that really got me was the guy who made that joke about the couple. 2011 was definitely more politically incorrect compared to today. If he made that joke today, he’d definitely be cancelled and receive backlash. The worst thing about it is the fact that no one even stood up to him and told him that his joke was insensitive, even though there was about 20-25 people there watching him perform. Also, I filmed the couple for a good 5 seconds or so and not one person made a comment to me about it either, not even my Mum. I mean, could you imagine the type of response you would receive from people if you blatantly filmed a gay/lesbian couple walking along the streets today? You'd get looks from people. Things have definitely changed in that regard. It's really interesting for me to look back on these recordings personally. At the time, I thought the idea of two men/women kissing and being in a relationship with each other was disgusting, which is why I filmed that lesbian couple when they walked past. My views towards gay people didn't change until one of my closest friends came out to me as being bisexual in a Facebook message later on that year.
