So to me cassettes were gone by 1999. For two reasons popularity of file sharing and cdr burning. However they were still being sold in stores up until 2005 or 2006 I think much more commonly in 00-03.
They took a break and then came back later on. But this was the last time there were a variety of massive new pop albums on tape lined next to cds which were also starting to sell less.
I recall seeing Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Oasis, White Stripes 50 cent, Jay Z, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eminem, Britney Spears etc on tape at numerous music stores throughout this period. Also minidisc for a bit as well.
Did you buy cassettes during this period ? What was the purpose?
Personally I was just starting to get into older tapes, for collectors reasons, but I bought some new rock albums back then. I liked the analog sound and owning more albums on different formats of bands I really liked.

I remember as late as 01, possibly even 02, my local pharmacy selling cassettes of what was basically themed background music. We had one that was some kind of island music. My family got an 01 new car and I was pretty bummed that it didn't have a cassette slot, so essentially that's why we stopped buying them. Otherwise the only one I believe I owned was of nursery rhymes.

For recording, yes. For new albums, no. But around 2009 when I got into collecting old music I bought some classic rock albums on cassette at garage sales and goodwill.

Walmart might have sold them as well. I remember buying a whole bunch In 2002 and 2003 but seeing new releases until 2006. I was like who is still buying this. I even left to the states, big city, in the mid 2000s for a while then and saw them at tower records and some other places. I don’t think virgin had any though.

I personally didn't buy them, however my parents bought cassettes for me when I was a kid. Towards the end of 2004, my Dad let me have one of his old portable cassette players so that I could record myself playing on my toy drum kit. I had a huge box full of them, but when my Dad was in the process of moving houses when I was 10, I stupidly decided to get rid of all of them as I was sorting through my stuff. Fortunately though, I re-discovered two of my cassette tapes a few months ago, one was in the portable cassette player itself (recorded in October 2008) and another was at the back of a cupboard in the house (which I think might be a tape from 2006). I want to try and extract the audio off them somehow.
Also, I received a portable video camera for my 10th birthday, so I had cassette tapes for recording things onto as well. That's another thing I want to try and digitalise. When I was a toddler, I also had those Winnie The Pooh and Disney cassette tapes as well. So, to sum it all up, I definitely used them during the 2000s (even if I didn't buy them), lol.
