Also, here's the list for 2020 as a bit of a bonus:
So I guess we all have to thank rockstar Shawn Mendes for helping to keep rock alive.
In all seriousness though, it is interesting to see all of the songs listed out in dot point form. It's hard to argue that rock started to lose culturally relevancy as a genre around 2011, but as you can see by the lists above, it was actually 2016 that the remnants of rock music's ashes had dissipated into thin air so to speak. If there was any doubt about when rock did die out, you can pinpoint 2016 as having been the year that the genre had become truly dead and buried. It had the least amount of guitar-based music on the charts since at least the very early '60s. Really, it's kind of amazing to think that just two rock songs made it onto the charts in that whole year. That's almost unheard of.
One interesting trend I picked up on while doing these lists is the fact that the Olympic years (2012, 2016 and *2020) coincidentally had the least amount of rock music.

{Spoiler}
"Circles" and "Adore You" carried over into 2020, but at least as of July, there have been no rock songs released in 2020 itself which have made it into the Top-40.
