The early 2010's (along with 2009) were a big transition when it comes to society. First off, America elected the first Black president which was a big deal. The economy wasn't very good but there was still hope. This was the era where people were starting to become more open-minded of differences, but also before politics and political correctness went too far. It genuinely felt like an optimistic time. There were also some terrible things that happened like Trayvon Martin (which sparked a whole new discussion on race) and Sandy Hook, both of which happened in 2012. It seemed like 2009-2011 was the sweet spot when it came to more open-mindedness and tolerance.

I agree. It was also the time when smartphones were just starting to take off, so social media culture in general wasn't as toxic and divisive as was it is today. I'm not sure if I would ever want to go back to the early 2010s if I had the choice, although compared with the world of today, the era seems like something of a utopia.

The early 2010s never stuck me as particularly socially progressive, at least in comparison to the years right before. IMO people were just as politically incorrect as they were in the 2000s with it comes to the LGBT community (if not worse with the ubiquity of gamer and internet bro-culture back then), with things like the f-word, "gaayyy" and homo thrown around like no big deal. In fact, many YouTubers and internet influencers are nowadays called out and canceled for things they did and said back then.
The mid-2010s on the other hand, despite being a noxious time for the internet, were in my opinion where people really started to be more mindful with labels. It was also the time where the "T" part in LGBT finally started to matter.

it was an interesting time but not one I would want to go back to except for the socially progressive aspect

In fact, many YouTubers and internet influencers are nowadays called out and canceled for things they did and said back then. I'm sure the countries we come from would have played a part in our perceptions of the era too. Belgium, and many other mainland European countries, are typically more progressive and forward-thinking than countries such as the United States or Australia, so the early 2010s may not have seemed to be such a huge contrast from the late 2000s to you as they would have if you had come from a non-European country. That isn't too say that the era wasn't transitional though. 2010 is the last year I can personally remember the f-word and "thats so gay" jokes being made on a regular basis and a street performer even made a homophobic slur to a lesbian couple in that April 2011 video I shared a month ago. However, those views were quickly becoming frowned upon and I would still say that the early 2010s were a socially progressive time overall. When I think of the early 2010s, I think of a greater acceptance of people from a minority background and of people who have fringe interests. The mid 2010s expanded upon that. I remember by the time I started Year 8 at the beginning of 2013, the health classrooms at my high school started to have "this is an LGBT friendly space" posters stuck onto their doors. Even though I am not a member of the LGBTI community myself, it really felt as though things had come a long way from what they were even at the end of the 2000s. There's no way those posters would have been stuck onto high school classroom doors back in 2008.

What I would give to relive the early 2010s. The only downside is that it would eventually be 2020 again.
I think there was a lot of progress being made in this country at that time, but unfortunately the fundamentalist Christian bigots couldn't accept it and as we know now, it was the bigots who won in the end by electing Donald Trump out of spite and completely collapsing America.
Also, the economy was bad at the time but that recession is nothing like what we are currently in, which most don't believe we will come out of until the 2030s.

We don't know yet. Normal in 1929 looked nothing like it did in 1947. This is one of those kind of transitions for both the USA and the world.

There are still people out there (thankfully less so now than in 2016) who will simply vote for him just to “trigger the libs” or something like that. 🙄 But I still won’t underestimate him. That’s how he got in in the first place.
