I was 5 years old at the time. These are some of the memories I have of the year: * Sitting in the bathtub tub on Christmas Eve and my Mum walking into the bathroom to tell me that someone was here to see me. I see them walking down the hallway and it turned out that it was actually my Dad, which meant that I got to experience Christmas Eve and Day with both my Mum and my Dad for the first and what would be, the only time. Best Christmas ever. * I can remember when Nick Jnr. was brand new, because it was a kids channel that launched a day after my 5th birthday. I never watched it though. * Pulling up to the driveway at my Dad's place and noticing that the address for the house was number 37. I made the comment that it was how old my Dad was (which it was). * I got to stay at my Grandparents' house for four nights because my Mum went on a holiday to Bali with a couple of her friends. * Me not wanting my Mum to go because of the Bali Bombings attack that happened in Late 2002, when I was 3. * My Mum coming back from Bali with this huge pile of pirated PS2 games. Too bad most of them didn't work in my PS2. * Getting picked up from pre-school one afternoon and my Mum telling me that she had to put Kya (our German Shepherd) down. * Going to Taronga Zoo in Sydney for a pre-school excursion. * My Mum and Dad got into an argument over whether I should be allowed to watch the "new" Simpsons episodes that aired later in the night on Channel Ten. My Dad was okay with it, but my Mum wasn't at first and she would only let me after watching an episode with me (and assessing it). The episode that happened to come on that night was the Season 12 episode "Homer vs Dignity", which was the worst possible episode to be shown as it has a scene where Homer gets raped by a panda. My Mum wasn't impressed, lol. * Hearing songs like "Hey Ya", "Left Outside Alone" and "We Used To Be Friends" in the car.

What are your memories of 2004? Was it a good year for you personally? Did you like the pop culture of the time? When thinking about 2004 I think of only the Fall - Winter part as thats when I felt things were most exciting that year. Here are a few John Titor style Bullet points that I remember about 2004 and whether or not it was a good year for me. - My friend used to print out phony movie tickets in the fall ( cinemas never scanned them they just saw the barcode and let you in)So any movie you can think of I got in for free with FAKE printed out movie tickets lol- Loved the music of this time, EMO really came into it's own, Who can forget the QUICK rise and fall of Ashlee Simpson.Who can forget Ryan Cabrera ?- I found out at this time by accidentally putting the dial on ABC Family that it had a Fox Kids sequel block called Jetixand had a new Power Rangers season, not only that but Tommy Oliver himself ( The Green Ranger) as a mentor that season !- I remember when DS dropped and I did not like it, I saw the psp adverts online and and compared to PSP DS just looked likean aging Nintendo 64- Myspace Myspace Myspace, around Fall in HS Myspace started popping off, it caught on VERYYYYY quick and there was nothing like it at the time.- WIFI mania !!!!!!! So malls and coffee shops all of a sudden started incorporating free wifi, it was pretty cool- San Andreas and Halo 2 launching was huge, prob the 10 biggest game launches of all time, posters on pepsi cans, Mt dew bottlesBillboards YOU NAME IT- People really started hating Bush at the time I remember, That MOSH song by Eminem was played so much- Laguna Beach had just launched and more and more people were dressing like they came surf boarding IRL - Toonami aired the Dragon Ball GT Shadow Dragon and Super 17 season this year I loved IT... Despite toonami being on Sat at 10pm......................- Cartoon Network got a new logo this year and.......... i actually was ok with it- DSL started getting way more popular towards the fall, Dial Up was becoming a relic
- YELLOW LIVE STRONG BRACELETS !!!!!! they were everywhere
- PS2 slim SUCKED I hated the re design
- in October I got STARZ! movie channel for free, so much nudity....................
- This chatroom got popular in HS it was called Chat avenue and it was CREEPY,

I remember the “Dean scream” was a meme when most folks didn’t knew what memes were yet.
I’ll probably make a notepad and put my memories of 2004 in it.

Memories of 2004.
I turned 14 in March of that year and I remember getting a VCR as a present (yes they still sold standalone VCRS back then.
- another old school thing I did back then, was record my favorite songs off XM radio on to CASSETTE tapes.
- The 2004 election and especially the controversial re-election of Bush. I was disappointed. The religious right got 4 more years.
- That website fuckthesouth.com with its rant about Bush voters going viral online. Same with the “dumbfuckistan” meme.
- still having to choose between Realplayer, Windows Media Player, and QuickTime to watch a video online. (God help you if you chose realplayer which took forever To load.
- Tricking people to visit “shock sites” or “screamers” before people got wise to them.
- ebaumsworld was the place to get your viral videos
- going on the Govteen.com message boards. (Never really posted there)
- Being absolutely obsessed with Pimp My Ride. Now it looks just plain outdated.
- The outrage when VH1 first did I Love The 90s. (The 90s were only 5 years ago!)
- VH1 was filled with nostalgia shows then (I Love The 70s/80s/90s, When ____ Ruled The World, Retrosexual the 80s, or list shows “100 most Awesomely bad songs of x” “Or 100 least metal moments” Or just general pop culture shows “Totally obsessed” “Super Secret Tv Formulas” “motor mouth” “best week ever” “the fabulous life of...” and yes, I was obsessed with these shows.
- also watching a lot of MTV, MTV2, Comedy Central, and Adult Swim (stuff most 14 year olds watched back then)
- Two Words: Napoleon Dynamite. nuff said.
- on MTV2 I looked forward to Headbangers Ball and Subterranean to get my metal and indie fix. Plus reruns of old Mtv shows like Beavis and Butthead, and Sifl and Olly, plus the only time I’ve ever seen MTV air anime: Heat Guy J.
- speaking of Indie, I listened to the Faction and Left Of Center and AltNation stations on Sirius radio all the time.
- Getting my first computer for myself in July of that year. (that I didn’t have to share with my dad) not to mention this was my first Windows XP computer. It was a cheap Compaq but I was very happy to have it.
- and getting a cable modem for the 1st time in August 2004. It was so magical.
- I remember in the beginning of September of that year, that horrible incident in Chechnya.
- let’s not forget the tsunami that happened on Christmas of that year.
- that crazy guy who bulldozed parts of his town and how that was quickly forgotten when Ronald Regan died the day after that incident.
- The low carb food diet craze was all over the place. Every other food commercial mentioned their new low carb options. I remember Coke made Coke C2 as a response to this fad.
- other sodas I remember: dnL, Red Fusion, Sprite Remix, Pepsi Twist
- Because of the Newlyweds show on MTV, and the show The Simple Life on Fox, The Simpson sisters and Paris Hilton seemed to be the most talked about people of the time. Next to Britney Spears and her marriage in Las Vegas that I think only lasted a day?
- The two biggest albums that year: Confessions by Usher and American Idiot by Green Day
- Crunk was going through it’s peak. this + celebrity gossip culture begat the “McBling era”
- Chapelle Show and all the quotes: especially “IM RICK JAMES BITCH!”
- Seeing the Notebook in theaters and this woman sitting behind me sobbing uncontrollably.
Will update when I can think of more.

The early part of 2004 (Jan-April) is a very underrated period. This is the last phase of the early 2000s era. Early and late 2004 felt worlds apart. Early 2004 felt like a extension of the mid to late 2003 and the tail end of the early 2000s imo.
What makes early 2004 stand out:
-Dial up still primarily used from what I remember. -Still largely web 1.0 -Myspace isn't really known and has barely taken off, social media and video content still old school. -Floppy disks are still used, not completely obsoleted by USBs -Fashion is identical to 2003, bits of late 90s fashion still there -Ipods and Itunes have still not kicked off, like after, so MP3 players, discmans with Mp3 options are still mostly popular. -Y2K styles, and sterotypical Y2K fashion isn't really outdated. Numerous influences and echo of that period are still noticeable and mixed into the 2003-2004 period. -Bleached jeans and designer clothing is completely not standard yet -Music genres from 2000/2001 to 2003 is still quite mainstream (early 2000s emo and pop punk, Y2K/early 2000s alternative rock, nu metal etc) is still mainly popular and not replaced with the genres that overtook them in mid 2004 to 2012. This also applies in varying degrees to pop and rap and other kinds of music.

I feel as though people tend to overstate the extent to which DVDs made VCRs obsolete during the mid 2000s, many people still used them to record shows off TV and you could even buy hybrid VCR-DVD players up until the end of the decade.

Myspace took off fast in New Jersey around October/November but I guess it depends where u lived, Early 2004 and late 2004 are 100% worlds apart I agree. There are a few times in the culture where I feel that school year starting is a "new" era Fall 2004 is 100% one of those school years. It was like a soft reboot of sorts.

Oh that was a typo, I mean early 2004, justed fixed it. Myspace was just starting to getting popular in mid 2004 with more indie scensters, punks, emos and goths from what I remember I guess it became bigger a few months later for sure. Even movies have a different vibe. Summer 2004 while defintelty and offically leaning late felt a mixed vibe wise, it didn't 100 percent have that late 2004-2006 vibe just yet. I feel that 1994 is very similar. The first half felt like the last gasp of the pure 1990-1993 vibe in general. The second half of 1994 felt like a demo version of 1995. Pretty much all the mid 90s trends were there but on top you had then Green day, weezer, korn and electronica/trip hop starting to get popular, things like simplified and androgynous fashion and semi-Y2k vibes here and there and the internet starting to get a bit bigger and more talked about, alot more than earlier. People usually associate it with 1995 or 95/96 but was kinda already there.

I agree with you, as far as years that have " BRAND NEW FEELING" I would put as follows Fall 2004 Fall 2001 Fall 2008 (The reality era) Fall 1997 Fall 2004 def had a BRAND NEW VIBE the movies seemed different as well, I pretty much saw every movie that year due to getting Free movie tickets. I feel 1994 kind has that vibe as well with Donkey Kong Country busting down the doors and killing Sega in the race.

And just the amount of 3d games in the arcades by late 1994 also on the 3DO, and the western coverage of upcoming consoles including the Ultra 64 preview at a big gaming convention in 1994 and release of the saturn and playstation in japan. Also the internet had enough variety of websites and features by late 1994 and a lot of media coverage and talk unlike 1991-1993 where it was just mainly for universities, businesses and a small handful of people using AOL and chat groups.

Remember the outrage of Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction and the firestorm it caused? I remember other countries making fun of Americans for being “prudes”.
Another live controversial TV moment in 2004...

fusefan Eminem's encore era and TRL in gen this year phew I remember when B2K announced that they broke up. I think in February of that year? TRL might have been past it’s peak when Carson Daily left but I still watched it. Oh yeah, my name fusefan was from back in the early mid 2000s back when I watched Fuse Tv. I remember this show called Dedicate Live and when an Avril Lavigne video would come on, messages about how she was a poser would scroll across the screen.

I remember 2004 crystal clear. I started Kindergarten in the 2004-05 school year and I find it really boring lol. I also remember playing my Gamecube and PS2 nonstop.
In terms of pop culture, I think 2004 was rather a split year. There are things that could fit in either 2001-2003 or 2005-2007. This was the year digital cameras became standard and MySpace was really popular with college students but it was the last pre-Youtube year. A lot of songs could either sound early 2000s or mid 2000s.
Songs that fit more with 2001-2003:
