I still have all the Nintendo power and gamepro magazines from 1995 with all the previews of the ultra 64. That period was the most exciting time ever in terms of hype. Just waiting for the n64 to come out, the concept of a 3d Nintendo system and playing Mario in 3d was like beyond cool it was such an exciting thing I don’t think any system hype since has matched it yet.

You could tell Nintendo was still on it's play it loud gimmick when making the Ultra 64 with it's all black controller lol I remember the day I first played Mario 64, I was at Toys R Us and they had N64 in the middle of the store separate from everything else. Launch day with a line wrapped around the block. I remember Boy Meets World name dropped N64 the week it came out ( not sure if this was timed LOL) It was the episode where Corey is baby sitting with Topanga. Too bad the hype for the system didn't make it to Fall 97 lol

And then renting the system with shadows of the empire and wave race in late 1996 before buying it a bit after. The shadows games was supposed to be the coolest thing ever but it was a drag to play after the first stage. Wave race was fun multiplayer more than solo.

1996 still had that grungy and angsty vibe of the classic 90s but it also had the bubbly bright vibe of the late 90s.
