If we continue these it would be nice to just cover one song at a time instead of lumping two completely different ones.
Anyway, "Empire State of Mind" is one of the most 2000s songs out there. Jay-Z and Alicia Keys ended 2009 with a return to the sound that initially defined the decade: a neo-soul ballad with strong hip-hop influences. Early '00s pop was a house built by these very types of songs, and it's almost as if the listening public had collective nostalgia as a decade came to an end. Beautiful anthem for a city that had a crazy and tumultuous decade, but things seemed to finally to come around at the end.

^ Makes very sense. I went back and listened to soul-inspired R&B and Hip-Hop of the 2000s and this song would fit perfectly in the early-mid 2000s.

Jay-Z and Alicia Keys were both at the height of their popularity in the 2000s, and this song really doesn't sound out of place within the decade. If anything, the 2000s sort of built up to the track.

it sounds 2000s imo, though I've heard some hip hop songs that have the similar sound in the Early 2010s like Stereo hearts or Billionare.
